ULM Reaches Set Points But Can't Hold On at Appalachian State

BOONE, N.C. The ULM volleyball team's road woes continued Friday night in Boone, N.C. The Warhawks dropped their ninth-straight match, 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 28-26) at Appalachian State. ULM's last road victory came on Sept. 9 at New Orleans.

The Warhawks (4-17 overall, 0-7 Sun Belt), had five set points in set three. They started strong in that set, jumping to a 7-4 lead. The Mountaineers responded with a 4-1 run to tie the set. The two teams went back and forth before two-straight Warhawk points put them up 15-13 going into the media timeout.

ULM eventually stretched its lead to three several times and had three set points at 24-21. The Mountaineers saved all three set points to tie the game at 24. The Warhawks had two more set points – at 25-24 and 26-25 – but App State saved them as well. Three-straight Mountaineer kills secured the set.

In set one the two teams battled evenly early. At 5-5, though, two Warhawk errors and a kill put the Mountaineers (11-7, 2-5) up by three. ULM closed to within one, 12-11, but App State responded with an 8-0 scoring run to lead 20-11. The Warhawks outscored App State 9-5 for the rest of the set, it wasn't enough to overcome the large deficit, and the Mountaineers took the set.

App State dominated in set two, racing to an 8-2 lead. The Mountaineers added a 7-1 scoring run to further cement their lead, and they cruised to an 11-point win.

Sophomore outside hitter Brynn Botkin led ULM with 12 kills. Freshman setter Morgan Howard and sophomore setter Bailey Roberson had 17 and 13 assists respectively. Howard also contributed 12 digs for an assist/dig double-double.

The two teams face off Saturday at 1 p.m. EDT/noon CDT to complete the weekend series.
