Hattiesburg, Mississippi – The ULM volleyball team Thursday night dropped game one of a two-game series at Southern Miss 3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 25-17).
 
In set one, the two teams stayed close, with the Warhawks (4-15 overall, 0-5 conference) trailing 10-8. The Golden Eagles (6-10, 1-4) then used a 4-1 run to put themselves ahead by five. ULM then scored six out of the next eight points to cut the lead to one, 16-15. That momentum, though, didn't last. Southern Miss went on a 9-2 run to win set one.
 
The Golden Eagles used an early 9-3 scoring run in set two to take a 12-6 lead. Then, trailing 14-9, the Warhawks closed the gap to two with a 6-3 run. Leading 17-15, Southern Miss responded with four unanswered points and eventually took a 24-18 lead. ULM saved five straight set points, but a service error put the Golden Eagles ahead two sets.
 
With ULM trailing 9-8 in the third set, Southern Miss went on a 6-2 run to take a 15-10 lead into the media timeout. After the timeout the Golden Eagles went on another 6-2 run to establish control of the set at 21-12. After the Warhawks scored four unanswered points, USM completed the sweep, winning four of the last five points.
 
Ariana Brown led the Warhawks in kills with 10. Morgan Howard and Bailey Roberson led the team with 14 and 12 assists respectively. Cameron Rogers and Callie Humphrey both had 12 digs.
 
ULM and Southern Miss close the series on Friday at 5 p.m.
