Warhawks Take Down Georgia State in Series Opener

MONROE, La. - Riding off the momentum gained from the win over Arkansas State last Saturday, the ULM volleyball team won its second game in a row with a 3-2 (25-16, 25-15, 20-25, 21-25, 15-12) victory over visiting Georgia State Thursday night at Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
 
The Warhawks (6-23 overall, 2-13 Sun Belt) have won consecutive conference games for the first time since 2018.
 
In the first set, ULM opened with a 9-7 lead. The Panthers (5-21, 2-13) produced a 4-0 run to gain control. The Warhawks responded with a 7-1 run to take a four-point lead. Another 6-1 run for ULM gave it firm control of the set. A final 3-0 run gave the Warhawks the first set.
 
The Panthers started set two strong with a 6-3 start. ULM went on a 4-1 scoring run to tie the set, and then an 8-1 run to take a five-point lead. After back-and-forth play, ULM used a 7-1 run to secure a 2-0 set lead.
 
Georgia State wasn't done yet. With the score at 20-20 in set three, it scored the final five points unanswered to extend the game.
 
The Panthers continued their momentum into the fourth set. With the Warhawks holding a 17-15 lead, Georgia State scored another 5-0 run to take control of the set. A final 4-0 scoring run tied the match two sets each.
 
In the fifth and final set, the Warhawks raced out to a 7-4 lead. The Panthers scored five out of the next six points to take a 10-9 lead, but ULM repeated their actions to bring it to match-point. A final kill by Taylor Thomas gave ULM its second win in a row.
 
Brynn Botkin and Ariana Brown both led the team with 13 kills each. Morgan Howard produced 25 assists, and Cameron Rogers had 17 digs. Logan Jeffus also had four blocks in the game.
 
The Warhawks will attempt to win the series at 2 p.m. Friday when they take on the Panthers in match two.
