BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar used a 27-6 run over 7:29 in the second half to pull away from ULM in a 97-73 win Thursday night at Neches Arena at the Montagne Center.
Savion Gallion led four Warhawks (4-5 overall) in double figures with a career-high 17 points.
Jalen Bolden and
Jacob Wilson added 11 points apiece while
Nika Metskhvarishvili had his first double-double of the season and third of his career with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
B.B. Knight knocked down six 3-pointers and scored 19 points to pace five Cardinals (5-5) in double figures. Chris Pryor had 15 points, eight rebounds and six assists, while Adam Hamilton added 14 points and Ja'Sean Jackson and Jakevion Buckely had 11 points each.
The Cardinals were red hot from the field, shooting 53% (31-of-59) overall and 44% (11-of-25) from 3-point range. They added an 83% clip (24-of-29) from the free throw line. ULM shot 44% (25-of-57) from the field, 33% (8-of-24) from deep and 15-of-23 (65%) from the free throw line. Lamar outrebounded ULM 39-28, with the Cardinals snaring 11 offensive rebounds. It marked just the second time this season ULM has been outrebounded (at No. 7/6 Houston on Nov. 6).
Lamar stretched its lead to 15, 56-41, on a jumper by Hamilton with 17:36 left in the game. ULM used a 10-2 run, capped on a 3-pointer by Gallion, to get within seven, 58-51, with 13:57 remaining. That's when Lamar embarked on the 27-6 run, which included 11-0 and 7-0 spurts, to put the game away. The Cardinals led 85-57 on a layup by Pryor to end the run with 6:28 to go.
The Cardinals scored the first 10 points of the game, with six coming from Pryor, to prompt ULM head coach
Keith Richard to take a timeout with 18:18 left in the first half. ULM played inspired out of the timeout, going on a 13-1 run to take the lead.
Tyreese Watson knocked down a 3-pointer to knot the game at 11, and ULM took its first lead on an offensive rebound and putback by Bolden with 14:06 to go before the break.
Lamar answered with a layup by Janko Buljic, but
Jacob Wilson's offensive rebound and putback put ULM up again, 15-13 with 13:13 left before halftime. The Cardinals responded with back-to-back 3-pointers by Knight to go up four, 19-15, with 12:05 left in the half. Lamar never trailed again.
ULM got as close as two, 21-19, on a steal by Watson and a layup by Gallion with 9:38 to play in the half. However, Lamar stretched the lead to 31-22 on Ja'Sean Jackson's jumper with 7:45 to go in the half.
Tyreke Locure fought back with consecutive 3-pointers to quickly cut the deficit to three, 31-28, at the 6:45 mark.
The Cardinals responded again with a 10-0 run to push the lead back to double digits, 41-28. ULM pulled within six, 43-37, on a layup by Bolden, but layups by Terry Anderson and Pryor pushed the lead back to 10 at halftime, 47-37.
ULM closes out the early season portion of nonconference play at 11:30 a.m. EST/10:30 a.m. CST Monday at Jacksonville.
