ULM's Eight-Game Winning Streak Snapped at Alabama

The Crimson Tide outlasted the Warhawks, 70-54, on Sunday afternoon.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The ULM women's basketball team (8-2) fell in a road non-conference game to Alabama (11-2) on Sunday (Dec. 17) at Coleman Coliseum in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The Warhawks' eight-game winning streak was snapped by the Crimson Tide in the loss. It was ULM's longest winning streak since the 2006-07 season.
 
"Our kids are tough and are competitors," said ULM women's basketball head coach Missy Bilderback. "I was pleased with our effort today, and our resilience gave us a chance to be in this ballgame. Alabama hit their shots and made us pay when we made mistakes."
 
The Crimson Tide shot 43.5% from the field and made six three-point baskets. The Crimson Tide had three players in double figures, led by Sarah Ashlee Barker, who posted 18 points. Aaliyah Nye (14 points) and Loyal McQueen (13 points) also finished in double-figure scoring.
 
For the Warhawks, Daisha Bradford shined with a game-high 24 points and scored above 20 points for the seventh time this season. The Clemson transfer was one rebound shy of a double-double and added three steals. Jakayla Johnson registered 10 points and Katlyn Manuel recorded eight points with five boards.
 
The Warhawks were held to 32.8% shooting and eight fastbreak points. Alabama outrebounded ULM by a margin of 12 and secured 15 offensive rebounds. The Crimson Tide collected 26 second chance points while ULM notched 13.
 
Alabama seized an 8-4 lead in the opening minutes of the contest. ULM pushed out in front to a 9-8 advantage from Bradford's first three-pointer of the game and a fastbreak layup by Johnson. The Crimson Tide recaptured the lead following a 5-0 scoring run and controlled a 16-11 lead midway through the quarter. Bradford scored her ninth point of the quarter and cut the Alabama lead to three at the 3:34 mark. Bama closed out the first quarter with a 5-0 run and led by eight at the end of the first.
 
The Warhawks closed the gap to three points at the start of the second quarter after tallying seven straight points. Manuel picked a steal that led to a pair of free throws to make the score 23-18. ULM recorded another steal on the defensive end when Sania Wells created a turnover and Manuel finished a fastbreak layup from a Bradford pass to put ULM within three points. Alabama ended the first half on an 11-4 scoring run and took a 34-24 lead into the locker room.
 
Johnson nailed her first shot from the perimeter in the second half to open the scoring for the Warhawks. Bradford drove the lane and netted her 15th point of the game on a layup that cut the deficit to six points with 8:30 on the clock. Alabama's Nye sank a triple and the Crimson Tide's lead grew back to double-digits. Alabama led by as many as 15 in the third. Manuel converted two shots at the free-throw line to complete ULM's largest scoring run of the afternoon, and ULM trimmed the margin in half. Wells knocked down a longball in the final minute of the third quarter to keep the Alabama lead to eight. The Crimson Tide held a 53-43 lead at the end of the third.
 
Alabama began the fourth quarter on a 9-2 scoring run and jumped out to its largest lead of the afternoon and maintained a double-digit lead throughout the quarter. Bradford hit her second three-pointer of the day in the fourth quarter for her 24th point in the final minutes. The Warhawks' winning streak was snapped at eight games after Alabama claimed a 70-54 win.
 
The Warhawks are set to conclude a two-game road trip on Thursday (Dec. 21) on the West Coast at Cal. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. CT / 2 p.m. PT from Haas Pavilion in Berkeley.
 
"We have the chance to bounce back versus a very good Cal team," said Bilderback.
