MONROE, La. – The ULM softball closed out the "Best On The Bayou Classic" by earning a split in a doubleheader against HCU on Sunday, Feb. 12. The Warhawks stranded nine baserunners in dropping Game 1, 4-1, but behind a strong pitching performance from Victoria Abrams and a five-run fifth inning rallied for a 6-2 victory in Game 2. ULM finished the "Classic" with a 3-2 record.

The Warhawks will face Alcorn in a midweek doubleheader at the ULM Softball Complex on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. before traveling to Long Beach, California, to play five games in the Wilson Invitational, Feb. 17-19.

"Our goal for the midweek doubleheader will be raising the bar and sustaining momentum offensively," ULM head coach Molly Fichtner said. "We are going to need to figure that out before we head to California."

General admission tickets for Wednesday's home doubleheader are priced at $10 for adults and $5 for youth (ages 4-12).

Game 1 Recap: HCU 4, ULM 1
Katy Janes allowed only one run over seven innings and Haylie Savage drove in a pair of runs to lead HCU to a 4-1 win over ULM in Game 1 of the doubleheader.

ULM starter Kassidy Giddens opened the game by striking out Avery Drake looking, but Savage followed with a solo home run to center field to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead.

The Warhawks answered in the bottom of the first. Alexis Chavez reached on a lead-off single down the left-field line and stole second. Kennedy Johnson followed with a single to left field that advanced Chavez to third. With Ashlan Ard batting, ULM attempted a double steal, but Chavez was thrown out attempting to steal home while Johnson moved to third. Ard tied the score at 1-1, hitting an RBI single to center on a 3-1 pitch.

Giddens retired 11 HCU batters in a row until Kaicey Hagler homered to center field to lead off the fifth. With one out, Maggie Childs reached on an infield single to shortstop and advanced to second on a passed ball. Hadlee Tomczak followed with an infield single to second base that moved Childs to third. Gianni Hulett, who came out of the ULM bullpen for the fourth consecutive game, gave up a lead-off single back to the circle to load the bases but got out of the jam with a force out at home and a fly out to left field.

ULM (2-2) went 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position and stranded nine baserunners, including eight left over the last five innings.

"We were a big hit away in the first game from turning the outcome," ULM head coach Molly Fichtner said.

HCU (3-1) added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Childs opened the frame with a double to right field and advanced to third on Tomczak's single through the left side of the infield. AB Garcia picked up an RBI on a groundout back to the pitcher that scored Childs, extending the Huskies' lead to 3-1. Drake reached on an infield single and moved Tomczak to third. Savage drove in her second run of the game with a single through the right side to account for the final score of 4-1.

Game 2 Recap: ULM 6, HCU 2
Victoria Abrams allowed one earned run while throwing a complete game and Kennedy Johnson drove in three runs as ULM bounced back to beat HCU in Game 2, 6-2.

Abrams retired the first eight batters she faced in the Huskie lineup before allowing back-to-back singles in the top of the third.

With two outs in the top of the fourth, Jasie Roberts reached on a fielding error by the shortstop and Kaicey Hagler followed with an RBI double to right center that scored Roberts from first base as HCU took a 1-0 lead.

ULM had a baserunner in each of the first four innings; however, the Warhawks were unable to manufacture a run off HCU starter Adi Prasifka, who had a double play turned behind her in the bottom of the third.

The Warhawks seized control of the game in the bottom of the fifth, scoring five runs on two hits and two errors. Korie Kreps reached on a fielding error by the first baseman. Kreps advanced to third base on Madison Blount's sacrifice and scored the game-tying run on a squeeze bunt by pinch hitter Gabby Davila. Lourdes Bacon followed with a single up the middle as Davila moved to second. Following a pitching change, with Lyndie Swanson replacing Prasifka, Alexis Chavez reached on another fielding error by the first baseman to load the bases. Next, Kennedy Johnson cleared the bases with a three-run triple to left center, scoring Davila, Bacon and Chavez, as ULM grabbed a 4-1 lead. Ashlan Ard became the fifth Warhawk in a row to reach base and picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice by the shortstop that scored Kennedy from third for a 5-1 lead.

"We didn't sustain offensive momentum, except for one inning all weekend," ULM head coach Molly Fichtner said. "That came from the squeeze bunt and the bases-clearing triple here in Game 2. We've got to be better offensively with that.

"Gab (Gabby Davila) did a great job executing the squeeze bunt to give us momentum."

ULM maintained the momentum as Abrams retired HCU in order – all on groundouts – in the top of the sixth.

The Warhawks added an insurance run in the bottom of the frame. With one out, pinch hitter Madelyn England was hit by a pitch. Kreps reached on an error by the second baseman, advanced to second on the throw while England moved to third. Bacon scored Kreps on an RBI groundout to second base.

HCU got a lead-off single from Childs to open the seventh. With two outs, AB Garcia reached on a bunt single while Childs advanced to third base. Avery Drake delivered an RBI single to center field that scored Childs as the Huskies closed their deficit to 5-2. Abrams retired Haylie Savage to end the game on a groundout to second base.

Abrams (1-1) permitted two runs, one earned, on six hits with two walks and a career-best six strikeouts.

"Vic had an incredible complete game," Fichtner said. "She had great composure and kept us in the game. I'm proud of how she competed."

Prasifka (0-1), who went 4 1/3 innings and allowed three unearned runs on four hits with one walk and two strikeouts, took the loss for the Huskies.

HCU outhit the Warhawks, 6-5, with Drake (2-for-4) and Garcia (2-for-2) leading the way. Bacon (2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI) accounted for two of ULM's five hits.

Kennedy Johnson delivered a three-run triple in the fifth inning in ULM's 6-2 win over HCU on Sunday, Feb. 12.
