ULM Softball Earns Split in Green & Gold Classic Friday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – ULM softball split a pair of games on Friday, Feb. 24 on the opening day of the Green & Gold Classic at Mary Bowers Field. In Game 1, the Warhawks got home runs from Kennedy Johnson and Ashlan Ard while three pitchers combined for a three-hitter in a 10-2 victory over Cleveland State in six innings. In Game 2, Mackenzie Griman tossed a complete game, allowing two runs on six hits, while Olivia Moxley tripled and homered to lead Butler to a 5-2 win over the Warhawks.
 
ULM plays another split doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 25, facing tournament host UAB at 10 a.m. in Game 1, followed by a rematch against Cleveland State at 2:30 p.m.
 
Game 1 Recap: ULM 10, Cleveland State 2 (6 Inn.)
Kennedy Johnson and Ashlan Ard each drove in a pair of runs while Kinsey Kackley, Maddie Nichols and Gianni Hulett combined for a three-hitter as ULM rolled to a 10-2 win over Cleveland State in six innings in the opening game of the Green & Gold Classic.
 
The Warhawks scored three runs on two hits and an error in the top of the first off CSU starter Melissa Holzopfel. Lourdes Bacon led off the game with an infield single to third and stole second. Alexis Chavez reached on a fielding error by the first baseman and Bacon advanced to third base. Ard turned an eight-pitch at-bat into a sacrifice fly, scoring Bacon from third for a 1-0 lead. With two outs, Johnson hit a two-run homer to left-center field, scoring Chavez from first, as ULM jumped out to a 3-0 advantage.
 
Gabby Davila gave the Warhawks a 4-0 lead with an RBI groundout to shortstop in the second that scored Jacelyn Buck, who opened the frame with a single to right field.
 
ULM (8-6) broke the game open in the third, scoring five times on four hits. Ard led off the inning with a solo home run to left field off Holzopfel. CSU reliever Jenna Watts entered the game and promptly walked Madelyn Fletcher on five pitches and Johnson followed with a double to center field that sent Fletcher to third. Campbell Selman's RBI ground out to second base scored Fletcher, and Jacelyn Buck followed with an RBI double to center field, scoring Johnson from third to give the Warhawks a 7-0 lead. With runners at second and third, Davila picked her second RBI, reaching on a fielder's choice while scoring Buck from third. Bacon followed with an RBI single to second base that scored Madison Blount, who reached on a walk, from third for a 9-0 advantage.
 
Cleveland State (1-5) took advantage of a pair of fielding errors by the Warhawks to put two unearned runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth. The Vikings opened the inning by loading the bases, thanks to back-to-back errors and a walk, and scored their first run as Nichols hit Payton Mueller-Stenz with a pitch. Two batters later, pinch hitter Meridith Rankl lofted a sacrifice fly to left field as CSU cut its deficit to 9-2.
 
With two outs in the top of the sixth, Korie Kreps singled to center field and advanced to second on a fielding error. Andie Edwards followed with an RBI single to left field that scored Kreps as ULM took a 10-2 lead.
 
Hulett ended the game by retiring CSU in order for the second inning in a row to secure the Warhawks' 10-2 victory in six innings.
 
ULM outhit CSU, 9-3, with Bacon (2-for-4), Johnson (2-for-2) and Buck (2-for-2) each collecting two hits. The Warhawks had four extra-base hits, including two by Johnson (home run and double), while the Vikings managed three singles.
 
Kackley (1-1) permitted two hits in two scoreless innings and recorded one strikeout. Nichols went two innings and allowed two unearned runs on one hit and two walks.
 
Holzopfel (1-3), who threw two-plus innings, gave up five runs, three earned, on four hits with one walk and one strikeout.
 
Game 2 Recap: Butler 5, ULM 2
Mackenzie Griman scattered six hits over seven innings and Olivia Moxley drove in a pair of runs on a triple and solo home run as Butler defeated ULM, 5-2, Friday afternoon at Mary Bowers Field.
 
In the top of the third inning, Kieli Ryan doubled to right-center field off ULM starter Victoria Abrams, and Moxley followed with an RBI triple to right field that scored Ryan as Butler (2-10) took a 1-0 lead. With Sydney Carter at the plate, Moxley scored on a wild pitch to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 advantage.
 
Griman cruised through the first four innings as only four base runners reached – one on a walk, two on errors and one hit by pitch.
 
ULM (8-7) threatened to score in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Kennedy Johnson reached after being hit by the first pitch of the at-bat. Madison Blount delivered the Warhawks' first hit of the game with a double to right field that sent Johnson to third. Madelyn Fletcher lined into a double play to the shortstop to end the inning.
 
With two away in the top of the fifth, Butler scratched out two more runs. Cate Lehner reached on a fielding error and stole second base, and Kaylee Gross followed with an RBI double to left field that scored Lehner for a 3-0 lead. Adrianna Chavarria relieved Abrams and issued an eight-pitch walk to Ella White, with Gross advancing to third on a wild pitch during the at-bat. The Bulldogs scored their fourth run while attempting a double steal as White stayed in a rundown long enough for Gross to score from third.
 
With one out in the top of the seventh, Moxley's solo blast to left-center field gave Butler a 5-0 advantage.
 
With one away in the bottom of the seventh, ULM got back-to-back singles from Fletcher and Jacelyn Buck. Two batters later, pinch hitter Kennedy Page reached on an infield single to the pitcher to load the bases. Lourdes Bacon followed with a two-run double to left field, scoring Buck and Campbell Selman, as the Warhawks pulled to within 5-2. With the potential game-tying run at the plate, Griman struck out Alexis Chavez swinging to end the rally.
 
The Bulldogs and Warhawks each had six hits, but ULM stranded six base runners.
 
Griman (1-5) tallied three strikeouts en route to her complete game.
 
Abrams (1-2) pitched 4 2/3 innings and allowed four runs, two earned, on five hits with no walks and four strikeouts. Chavarria recorded five strikeouts in her 2 1/3 innings of relief.
