Turnovers Costly as Warhawks Fall at Texas State, 74-56

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Da'Nasia Hood and Kennedy Taylor combined to score 33 points as Texas State defeated ULM, 74-56, in Sun Belt Conference action on Saturday, Feb. 4 at Strahan Arena. The Bobcats matched their season high with 15 steals and converted ULM's 24 turnovers into 33 points.
 
"Hats off to Texas State," ULM head coach Brooks Donald Williams said. "They are a tough, veteran team. You can't make many mistakes against them because they certainly make you pay, and they did today."
 
Texas State (16-7, 8-4 Sun Belt) raced out to an 11-3 lead at the 6:03 mark in the first quarter, but the Warhawks answered with an 11-6 run and pulled to within 17-14 on Aasia Sam's 3-point play with 3:08 left. The Bobcats, who shot 50 percent (8-of-16) from the field including 2-of-4 from 3-point range, led 20-14 after the first 10 minutes.
 
Hood hit a pair of free throws to push Texas State's advantage to 22-14 with 9:32 remaining in the second quarter. Katlyn Manuel scored six consecutive points and Bre Sutton completed a 3-point play as ULM (7-16, 3-9) went on a 9-0 run to claim its only lead at 23-22 with 7:04 left in the first half. The Bobcats responded with an 8-0 spurt to grab a 30-23 advantage on Chelsea Johnson's layup off a Warhawk turnover with 2:22 on the clock. Taylor made five-straight free throws in the final second of the period, with three coming after being fouled on a 3-point field-goal attempt and two more off a technical foul, to send Texas State to the locker room with a 10-point lead at 37-27.
 
ULM scored the first five points of the third quarter as Emma Merriweather finished off a 3-point play and Sutton converted a steal into a layup to cut its deficit in half at 37-32 with 9:06 on the clock. A layup by Taylor ignited an 11-2 run as Texas State built a 50-36 lead on Ja'Kayla Bowie's 3-pointer, off a Warhawk turnover, with 5:33 remaining. Amaya Ford hit a jumper from outside the paint and Amani Brown followed with a 3 as ULM closed the margin to nine at 50-41 with 3:35 left in the period. After 30 minutes, Texas State led 57-46. The Bobcats made 9-of-13 field-goal attempts (69 percent) in the third quarter, but the Warhawks stayed within striking distance as Ford scored seven points off the bench in the period.
 
Texas State opened the fourth quarter with a 10-0 run to break the game open. A pair of free throws from Taylor gave the Bobcats a 67-46 lead with 3:45 on the clock. ULM went 0-for-4 from the floor and committed seven turnovers while going scoreless for the first 6:15 of the period. A steal and layup from Sierra Dickson gave Texas State its largest lead at 74-52 with 46 seconds remaining. The Warhawks hit only 1-of-9 field-goal attempts over the final 10 minutes.
 
As a team, Texas State hit 26-of-56 shots from the floor (46 percent), including 5-of-13 3-pointers (39 percent), while ULM shot 35 percent (20-of-58) from the field, including 1-of-7 from behind the 3-point arc. The Warhawks outrebounded the Bobcats, 37-36, including 17 offensive boards. Texas State held a decided advantage in points off turnovers, 33-22, and fast-break points, 21-11. ULM is 1-7 in games when it turns the ball over 20 or more times.
 
The Bobcats led for 38:15 in the game en route to winning their ninth consecutive game in the series.
 
Hood, who posted a double-double for her second-straight game, scored a game-high 18 points to go along with 10 rebounds and four steals. She made 7-of-14 shots from the field, including 2-of-3 3s.
 
Taylor, who went 4-of-8 from the floor and a perfect 7-for-7 from the free-throw line, finished with 15 points, four assists and four steals. Texas State also got 10 points from Bowie.
 
Manuel led the Warhawks with 14 points, connecting on 6-of-11 field-goal attempts. Sutton, who reached double figures in scoring for the third-straight game, added 13 points.
 
Merriweather was limited to six points but collected a game-high 14 rebounds, with six coming off the offensive glass.
 
ULM opens next week's schedule with its third consecutive road game on Thursday, Feb. 9 at South Alabama (11 a.m. tipoff) before returning home to face Troy on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 2 p.m. in Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
