ULM Softball Returns Home for Midweek Game Against Abilene Christian

MONROE, La. – The ULM softball team (11-7) puts its three-game winning streak on the line for a midweek home game against Abilene Christian (4-11) on Wednesday, March 1 at 6 p.m. Last weekend, the Warhawks went 4-1 at the Green & Gold Classic, including a pair of victories over UAB.
 
ULM is 6-4 in 10 home games this season. Wednesday's midweek match against ACU is sandwiched between last week's tournament in Birmingham, Alabama, before traveling to Thibodaux, Louisiana, for a three-game series against Nicholls on Friday, March 3 (single game at 6 p.m.) and Saturday, March 4 (doubleheader at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.).
 
Three Warhawks are batting over .300, led by Lourdes Bacon (.383; 23-of-60, 11 runs scored, 9 RBI), followed by Kennedy Johnson (.327; 18-of-55, 16 runs scored, 10 RBI) and Madelyn Fletcher (.314; 11-of-35).
 
Bacon, who has a seven-game hitting streak, leads the team in on-base percentage (.422) and multi-hit games (6). The junior from San Antonio, Texas, leads the Sun Belt Conference in hits (23) and stolen bases (13). She also ranks among the NCAA Division I leaders in hits (No. 24) and steals (No. 6).
 
Johnson, who leads the Warhawks in runs scored (16) and slugging percentage (.527), has recorded five multi-hit games. She hit .400 (6-of-15) with six runs scored, a double, two home runs and four RBI in the Green & Gold Classic last weekend.
 
Ashlan Ard (.268; 11-of-41) leads the team in RBI (12) and ranks second in slugging percentage (.512).
 
As a team, ULM leads the Sun Belt and ranks No. 23 in the NCAA Division I with its .980 fielding percentage.
 
Three pitchers – Adrianna Chavarria (3-1, 2.41 ERA, team-leading 23 strikeouts), Gianni Hulett (3-1, 2.55 ERA) and Victoria Abrams (2-2, 3.20 ERA, 22 strikeouts) – have combined to throw 99 2/3 innings. Hulett, who leads the Sun Belt in stikeouts-to-walks ratio (7.5; 15 strikeouts, 2 walks), also ranks second in the conference and fourth in the NCAA Division I with three saves.
 
Last weekend, ACU posted a 1-4 record in the Lone Star State Invitational in Austin, Texas, with three of those losses coming against ranked opponents (twice against Virginia Teach and once to Texas).
 
The Wildcat lineup features four .300 hitters, including Miranda Lista (.356; 16-of-45, 14 runs scored, 6 doubles), Mercedes Eichelberger (.353; 18-of-51), Avery Miloch (.340; 16-of-47, 4 home runs, 10 RBI) and Sammie Shelander (.310; 13-of-42, 12 RBI). ACU ranks among the Western Athletic Conference leaders in batting average (third at .299) and slugging percentage (fourth at .450).
 
Talia Nielsen (3-3, 4.79 ERA, 22 strikeouts) and Riley White (1-4, 7.73 ERA, 20 strikeouts) have combined for 73 1/3 innings in the circle, with each making six starts in 2023.
 
Wednesday's game marks just the fourth meeting between ULM and ACU. The Warhawks have won the three previous meetings by a combined margin of 23-2. The last meeting came on Feb. 22, 2020, in a tournament in Youngsville, La., with ULM winning 8-0 in five innings.
 
General admission tickets are priced at $10 for adults and $5 for youth (ages 4-12) and may be purchased at the arched entrance to the ULM Softball Complex.
