ULM Softball Opens Sun Belt Play with Doubleheader Sweep Against Eagles

STATESBORO, Ga. – The ULM softball team opened its 2023 Sun Belt Conference schedule with a doubleheader sweep at Georgia Southern on Friday (March 17) afternoon. In Game 1, ULM got all the offense it needed in a six-run second inning and Gianni Hulett threw 2 2/3 scoreless innings in relief for a 6-3 win over the Eagles in the conference opener. Three Warhawk pitchers – Kassidy Giddens, Adrianna Chavarria and Hulett – combined for a four-hit shutout as ULM took Game 2, 2-0.

"That's the best we've sustained momentum in that 6-run inning all year," ULM head coach Molly Fichtner said. "Our hitters did a great job passing the bat and that is something we have to do consistently to put ourselves in a position to be successful.

"It was a heck of a staff shutout in Game 2. We manufactured just enough runs and they held it for us in the circle. Kass had a great start, Rocky did her job in mid relief, and G shut the door the way she knows how. I'm very proud of the staff and excited for Coach (Lea) Wodach."

ULM will conclude its three-game Sun Belt series against Georgia Southern Saturday at Eagle Field at 5 p.m. ET/4 p.m. CT.

"Tomorrow is going to be the most important game this year that we've played," Fichtner said. "Georgia Southern is going to come out ready to play and we've got to give them our best."

Game 1 Recap: ULM 6, Georgia Southern 3
ULM generated all the offense it needed in the second inning during Game 1 of Friday's doubleheader, scoring six runs on six hits, and Gianni Hulett tossed 2 2/3 scoreless innings in relief as the Warhawks defeated Georgia Southern, 6-3, in the Sun Belt Conference opener.

After stranding two base runners in the top of the first, ULM (17-10) batted around in the second inning. Campbell Selman led off the frame with a double to right-center field and advanced to third on a groundout. The Warhawks took a 1-0 lead on Jacelyn Buck's squeeze bunt that scored Selman from third and Buck advanced to second on a throwing error by the third baseman. Taylor Broddick followed with a single to left field and stole second. Lourdes Bacon delivered an RBI single to left field that scored Buck from third. Kennedy Page came through with ULM's third-straight single to left field that scored Broddick from second and Bacon all the way from first after a throwing error by the left fielder. Kennedy Johnson gave the Warhawks a 5-0 advantage with an RBI single to left field, scoring Page from third. With two outs, Madison Blount drove an RBI double into right-center field that scored Johnson from second base, extending the ULM lead to 6-0.

Georgia Southern (10-13) threatened to get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second, but with runners at first and second and two away, Victoria Abrams struck out Kinley Stewart swinging.
