MONROE, La. – Kade Dupont had three hits and drove in four runs as ULM snapped a four-game losing streak with a 10-6 win over Louisiana Tech Tuesday night at Lou St. Amant Field.
Dupont led four Warhawks with multiple hits, as
Zack Floyd tallied two hits with two runs scored, while
Matt Abshire and
Carson Jones had a pair of hits each with an RBI. Jones scored twice and Abshire scored once. Walker Burchfield led LA Tech with two hits and two RBIs, while Ethan Bates and Jonathan Hogart also had two hits and Philip Matulia added two RBIs.
"It was an outstanding night for our offense," ULM head coach
Michael Federico said. "The five spot in the second inning gave us a little cushion. I don't think our offense backed down at all. That was encouraging, too."
Federico said Dupont's night was another positive for the Warhawks.
"As far as Kade goes, he's just a baseball player," Federico said. "He's fun to watch for the average fan that just watches the game. When you come and watch him play every day, you appreciate what he does and how he goes about his business. What people don't see is what he does on the days that we're not playing. He prepares himself and he's mentally tough. That's what's fun about him. He's just a baseball player."
Shawn Dalton Weatherbee also helped set the table for ULM from the leadoff spot, reaching base three times after he was hit by a pitch twice and hit a double in the sixth inning. He scored twice.
"He's just eating baseballs right now and finding ways to score runs," Federico said. "He's been playing great defense in the outfield. He's fighting through some bumps and bruises and everything, just like all of our guys are. He's a tough, hard-nosed kid. He has a football mentality and that definitely showed up tonight."
Louisiana Tech (10-11 overall) struck first in the top of the second inning as Hogart hit an RBI single to left, scoring Matulia for the 1-0 lead.
ULM (8-14 overall) answered back in the bottom half of the second. After
Jake Haggard walked and Floyd singled to open the inning, LA Tech's Nick Fraginals retired the next two hitters. ULM then scored five runs with two outs in the inning.
Matt Abshire hit a bloop single to right field to score Haggard.
Carson Jones then singled on the infield as Floyd scored from second base to give ULM the 2-1 lead. After
Shawn Dalton Weatherbee was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Dupont hit a 2-RBI single to right-center field to push the lead to 4-1. After
Riley Davis walked, Haggard reached on an error, which allowed Weatherbee to score for the 5-1 lead.
The Bulldogs tied the game in the top of the third, as Matulia hit a 2-RBI double to right and Burchfield hit a 2-RBI single to center to knot the game at 5.
ULM regained the lead in the fifth inning as Haggard singled to open the inning and Floyd followed with a double.
Jayson Zmejkoski picked up an RBI groundout and
Travis Washburn hit a sacrifice fly as Haggard and Floyd scored to put the Warhawks on top, 7-5.
The Warhawks faced LA Tech's Friday night starting pitcher Jonathan Fincher in the sixth inning, but continued its offensive momentum. Jones led off with an infield single and Weatherbee doubled to left center. Dupont followed with a 2-RBI double to right center to push ULM's lead to 9-5. With two outs,
Chase DeJean beat out a ground ball to third for an infield RBI single, scoring Dupont for the 10-5 advantage.
Bates hit a solo home run in the top of the ninth inning for the only Bulldog run over the final six innings.
ULM's
Brandt Corley,
Russell Derbyshire and
Nicholas Judice combined to throw the last six innings, allowing just one run and three hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Corley (1-2) threw 2 2/3 innings for his first-career win, allowing two hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Derbyshire threw a season-high 1 1/3 innings with a strikeout, while Judice allowed a run with one hit and two strikeouts over two innings.
"I was impressed with Corley," Federico said. "I know he had the two walks. There was a good crowd here. It was the first time he's kind of been in that, and his juices were going. It was encouraging to see that. Then Derbyshire inheriting the runner at second base and not giving up that run there and then hanging the zero in the seventh was huge."
LA Tech threw six pitchers in the loss, with Ryan Harland (0-2) suffering the loss, allowing two runs on four hits with one walk and one strikeout over 3 1/3 innings.
"Sometimes a good win helps," Federico said. "Hopefully our guys can taste it. We're close, in some regards, but we've got to continue to keep getting better. We played an errorless game tonight, so I think that helps a little bit as well, and fortunately we were able to keep some of those walks from scoring."
ULM returns to Sun Belt Conference play at Troy. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. Friday, 3 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday at Riddle-Pace Field.
