Abrams Tosses 1-Hit Shutout; ULM Defeats Troy in Series Opener, 2-0

MONROE, La. – Victoria Abrams tossed a one-hitter en route to her first career shutout while Campbell Selman and Madison Blount each provided two-out RBI singles as ULM opened its first home Sun Belt Conference series of the season with a 2-0 victory over Troy Friday afternoon.

"Victoria did a great job," ULM head coach Molly Fichtner said. "Any time you can throw a seven-inning shutout, it's a big deal, especially against an offense like Troy. It was neat to see the defense play behind Vic. We had numerous 'plus' plays that were momentum, game changers.

"Troy has a great pitching staff, but Selly and Blount came through for us and gave us the clutch hits needed to win the game. We have to sustain offense and we will score, and that's exactly what happened with those two."

Abrams got off to an inauspicious start, walking Troy's first two batters of the game on nine pitches. Five base runners reached for the Trojans over the first three innings on three walks, a fielding error and a hit by pitch.

Troy had the first scoring opportunity in the top of the third inning. D'Aun Riggs reached on a fielding error by the shortstop to open the frame and advanced to third on a pair of groundouts. The Trojans had runners at the corners after Libby Baker reached after being hit by the first pitch of her at-bat. With Jade Sinness at the plate, Riggs got caught in a run-down and was tagged out by Kennedy Johnson while attempting a double steal with Baker.

Abrams counterpart Leanna Johnson retired the first eight Warhawk batters she faced. With two outs in the bottom of the third, Kennedy Page delivered ULM's first hit with a single to left-center field.

With one away in the bottom of the fourth, Ashlan Ard doubled into left-center field. Pinch-runner Kassidy Giddens advanced to third on a groundout and scored the first run of the game on Selman's single to center field.

Abrams had a no-hitter through the first five innings, but Baker slapped an 0-2 pitch through the right side of the infield for Troy's first hit to lead off the sixth. ULM turned its first of two double plays behind Abrams on a groundout to end the frame.

ULM (19-12, 3-1 Sun Belt) added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. Lourdes Bacon led off the inning with a single to left field but was thrown out trying to steal second base. Johnson drove a 3-2 pitch into left field for a one-out single but was cut down at home plate by the right fielder while attempting to score on a throwing error by the third baseman. With Ard at third, Blount gave the Warhawks a 2-0 lead, hitting the first pitch of the at-bat down the left-field line for an RBI single.

Troy (21-9-1, 2-1-1) tried to stage a late-inning rally. Audra Thompson drew a seven-pitch walk to lead off the seventh, but she was erased when Kennedi Gaton lined into a 5-3 double play. Abrams closed out the game with a swinging strikeout against pinch-hitter Kayden Dunn.

Abrams, who posted her third complete game of the season, improved her record to 4-3, including 2-0 in Sun Belt games. She walked a season-high six batters and recorded four strikeouts while throwing 111 pitches.

Johnson (16-3) allowed two runs, one earned, on six hits over six innings with no walks and four strikeouts.

The Warhawks outhit the Trojans, 6-1, with the top five in the ULM lineup each collecting one hit.

ULM and Troy will play the second game of the weekend series Saturday, March 25 at 2 p.m. With a 60-percent chance of rain in the forecast, the series final on Sunday, March 26 has been moved up to 10 a.m. from 12 p.m.

Jacelyn Buck recorded two putouts and seven assists in ULM's 2-0 victory over Troy on Friday.
