SAN ANTONIO – UIW scored six runs, all with two outs, in the bottom of the third inning to break the game open and picked up a 12-4 win over ULM to sweep the series Sunday afternoon at Sullivan Field.
With the game tied at 2 and the bases empty with two outs, UIW four hits, two walks and a hit batsman to put up six runs in the bottom of the third inning. Alec Carr hit a 3-run home run, Joe Jimenez followed with a 2-run home run two batters later, and Wilson Ehrhardt capped the inning with an RBI single to push the lead to 8-2.
UIW added four more runs in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 10, 12-2. Hernan Yanez hit a 2-RBI double, Carr added an RBI double and Ehrhardt picked up another two-out RBI single.
Carr also belted a 2-run homer for UIW in the second inning to finish 3-for-5 at the plate with two homers, a double, six RBIs and three runs scored. Yanez also added three hits with two RBIs, while Ehrhardt, Cameron Crotte and Jimenez all ahd two hits each. Ehrhardt, Yanez and Jimenez had two RBIs apiece.
ULM picked up three solo home runs in the game, with
Davis Meche leading off the game with a home run, while
Zack Floyd added one in the sixth inning and
Michelle Artzberger belted one in the eighth. Meche scored ULM's other run on a wild pitch in the top of the fourth inning to tie the game at 2. Floyd and
Chenar Brown finished with two hits each for ULM.
Ryan Schlotzhauer (1-0) earned the win for UIW, throwing two shutout innings out of the bullpen with one hit, one walk and three strikeouts.
Chipper Menard (1-1) took the loss for ULM, giving up eight runs on seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts in three innings.
ULM plays nine of its next 10 games at Lou St. Amant Field, starting at 6 p.m. Tuesday against Memphis.
