MONROE, La. – ULM scored six runs in the bottom of the third inning to take the lead and held off South Alabama's rally for its fourth-straight win, 7-6, on Friday night at Lou St. Amant Field.
Trailing 1-0 in the third inning, ULM tied the game when
Kade Dupont hit an RBI single to right field, scoring
Jayson Zmejkoski.
Shawn Dalton Weatherbee followed with a two-RBI double to the wall in right-center field, plating
Carson Jones and Dupont for the 3-1 lead. After a walk by
Riley Davis and a groundout,
Cardell Thibodeaux hit a 3-run home run over the right-field wall to push the lead to 6-1.
USA answered back with a solo home run by Tyler Borges in the fourth inning and a 3-run home run by Will Turner in the fifth, pulling within a run at 6-5. Davis belted a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the fifth to push the lead back to two, 7-5.
South Alabama closed with a run again in the eighth inning when Joseph Sullivan led off the inning with a home run. However,
Nicholas Judice retired the next three batters to end the inning.
Carson Orton threw a scoreless ninth inning with a walk and a strikeout for his third save.
Cam Barlow (3-4) picked up the win on the mound, throwing five innings, allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits with one walk and six strikeouts. Judice allowed just one run on three hits with one walk and four strikeouts over three innings.
Sam Knowlton (2-2) took the loss for South Alabama, giving up six runs on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts in three innings.
Thibodeaux led ULM with two hits and three RBIs. Erick Orbeta had three hits for USA, while Borges had two hits and Turner drove in three runs.
ULM and South Alabama continues the series at 2 p.m. Saturday at Lou St. Amant Field.
