LITTLE ROCK – Little Rock scored seven runs across the second and third innings, while ULM stranded 13 runners on base as the Trojans swept the regular season home-and-home series from the Warhawks with a 10-4 win Wednesday night at Gary Hogan Field.
ULM (14-23 overall) had a chance to take control of the game in the second inning, loading the bases with no outs. However, a double play ball, with outs coming at first base and home, brought a temporary end to the threat. After
Matt Abshire walked to reload the bases,
Carson Jones walked to force in
Jake Haggard for the 1-0 lead. A strikeout ended the inning.
Little Rock (20-14) then put up three runs in the bottom of the second and four more in the third to pull away to the 7-1 lead. The Trojans added an insurance run in the seventh inning to lead, 8-1.
ULM showed life in the eighth inning. With one out,
Jayson Zmejkoski was hit by a pitch,
Chenar Brown singled to right and Jones doubled down the left-field line to cut the gap to 8-3. After a pitching change, a bunt moved Jones to third before
Kade Dupont hit an RBI single to right to close the score to 8-4.
Shawn Dalton Weatherbee was then hit by a pitch and
Riley Davis walked to load the bases, bringing Haggard to the plate as the potential game-tying run. However, after another pitching change, a strikeout ended the threat.
ULM finished the night 0-for-4 with a walk with the bases loaded.
Davis led ULM with three hits while Weatherbee had two hits and Jones drove in three runs. Nico Baumbach, Ty Rhoades, Christian Bernabe and Noah Brewer all had three hits as part of Little Rock's 18-hit attack, while Seguine had two hits. Rhoades and Seguine had three RBIs each, while Skyler Trevino and Rhoades hit home runs for the Trojans.
Nine Warhawk pitchers threw in the game, with
Adam Tubbs and
Justin Robinson being the only two to throw at least one inning and not allow a run.
Henry Shuffler (0-1) took the loss in the start, giving up three runs on three hits with three walks and two strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings. Austin Stubber (3-0) earned the win for Little Rock, throwing three innings out of the bullpen, allowing one hit with two strikeouts.
