Marshall Rallies, Holds Off ULM to Take Series, 4-3

MONROE, La. – Daniel Carinci's 2-run home run in the top of the seventh inning put Marshall in front, and two insurance runs in the ninth inning helped protect the Thundering Herd from ULM's rally in the bottom half, holding on for a 4-3 win to claim the series, two games to one, Sunday afternoon at Lou St. Amant Field.

Both starting pitchers turned in strong performances. Marshall's Zac Addkison (2-4) hit Shawn Dalton Weatherbee with a pitch on his first pitch of his outing. Weatherbee later scored on Jake Haggard's RBI groundout for the 1-0 lead. Addkison shut down ULM for seven innings, allowing the one run on four this with two walks and nine strikeouts to pick up the win.

Chipper Menard (2-3) was just as impressive for ULM, working six scoreless innings before running into trouble in the seventh. After Amari Bartee reached on an infield single, Carinci hit a two-strike, 2-run home run over the left-center field wall to put Marshall on top, 2-1. Menard suffered the loss, allowing two runs on six hits with no walks and seven strikeouts.

Marshall maintained the 2-1 lead to the ninth inning and added on some insurance. After Owen Ayers led off with a double, Justin Robinson retired Gio Ferraro and Elijah Vogelsong to put Ayers on third with two outs. Carinci grounded deep in the hole at shortstop, but a throwing error allowed Carinci to reach safely and Ayers to score to push the lead to 3-1. Calin Smith and KB Peralta followed with back-to-back singles to score Carinci for the 4-1 advantage.

ULM fought back in the bottom of the ninth. Cardell Thibodeaux led off with a double. However, a groundout and fly out left ULM down to its final out. Carson Jones battled for a single on a 3-2 pitch, moving Thibodeaux to third and bringing the potential tying run to the plate in Weatherbee. Weatherbee extended the game with a 2-RBI single through the middle to score Thibodeaux and Jones to pull within a run, 4-3. After a pitching change, Marshall's Drew Harlow ended the game by getting Dupont to pop out in foul territory to first base.

Jayson Zmejkoski and Carson Jones had two hits each for ULM, while Luke Edwards and Carinci had two hits each for Marshall.

ULM closes out a four-game homestand at 4 p.m. Tuesday against former Sun Belt Conference opponent Little Rock at Lou St. Amant Field.
