Selman Delivers Game-Winning Double in 6th; ULM Rallies Past GSU in SBC Series Opener, 5-4

MONROE, La. – Campbell Selman went 3-for-4, including a two-run double in the sixth inning, and Gianni Hulett threw two scoreless in relief as ULM softball rallied from a 4-2 deficit for a 5-4 victory over Georgia State Friday in the opening game of the final home Sun Belt Conference series.

ULM (22-28, 5-14 Sun Belt) had the first scoring opportunity as Selman and Madison Blount opened the bottom of the second with back-to-back singles, and with one out, loaded the bases when Jacelyn Buck was hit by a pitch. Georgia State starting pitcher Hallie Adams got out of the jam, thanks to a 5-2-3 double play.

Adrianna Chavarria dominated early, retiring eight of the first 10 Georgia State batters she faced through the first three innings.

The Warhawks scratched out a run against Adams in the third. Kennedy Page led off the frame with a single through the right side of the infield and Lourdes Bacon reached on an infield single to the pitcher. Both runners advanced a base on Korie Kreps' sacrifice bunt. Ashlan Ard reached on a fielder's choice as Page was thrown out at home by the shortstop, but Bacon scored all the way from second base on the ground ball by stealing home to give ULM a 1-0 lead.

Georgia State (17-31, 6-13) tied the score at 1-1 with one out in the top of the fourth as Chloe Nadler drove a 1-0 pitch from Chavarria over the right-center field for her seventh home run of the season.

ULM regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Blount lifted the first pitch from Adams into left field for a lead-off single. Pinch runner Taylor Broddick advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Alexis Chavez. With two outs, Kennedy Johnson delivered an RBI single to left field that scored Broddick from second base as the Warhawks took a 2-1 advantage. Page followed with a single up the middle, but Johnson was thrown out at home plate by the center fielder while attempting to score from second.

The Panthers answered in the top of the fifth. Maia Mumpfield led off the inning with a single to left center, and with one out, Chloe Middlebrooks drew a seven-pitch walk. Emily Brown followed with an RBI double down the right-field line that scored pinch runner Maya Montague from second as GSU pulled even again at 2-all. After Ashton Schroyer reached on an infield single to third, Middlebrooks scored from third on Nadler's sacrifice fly to right field as the Panthers took their first lead of the game at 3-2. With Bailee Richardson at the plate, GSU extended its lead to 4-2 after perfectly executing a double steal as Brown stole home and Schroyer swiped second base.

Ellie Doolittle, who replaced Adams in the circle in the bottom of the fifth, worked out of a bases-loaded jam. With one out, Kreps drew a five-pitch walk, Ard lofted a single into left field and Selman followed with a single down the left-field line to load the bases. Doolittle rebounded to induce two ground outs to end ULM's scoring threat.

ULM staged a two-out rally in the sixth. After Doolittle retired the first two Warhawks, Page beat out an infield single to shortstop and Bacon followed with a single up the middle. Kreps recorded ULM's third consecutive single on a ground ball to shortstop and Page scored all the way from second base, sliding around the attempted tag by the catcher, as the Warhawks pulled to within 4-3. Ard loaded the bases after working an eight-pitch walk. Selman slammed a 2-0 pitch off the base of the left-field wall for a two-run double, scoring Bacon and Kreps, as ULM took the lead for good at 5-4.

The Warhawks, who recorded a season-high 13 hits, outhit GSU, 13-7. The first five batters in the ULM lineup went a combined 9-for-17 (.529). Four ULM players posted multi-hit games, paced by Selman (3-for-4) and Page (3-for-3) who collected three hits apiece, while Bacon (2-for-4) and Blount (2-for-4) had two each.

Hulett, who improved her record to 8-4 on the season, allowed two hits over two scoreless innings with two walks and one strikeout. Chavarria worked the first five innings and surrendered four runs on five hits with two walks and one strikeout.

Doolittle (8-10) took the loss in relief after permitting three runs on six hits over two innings with two walks and no strikeouts. Adams went four innings and allowed two runs on seven hits with no walks and one strikeout.

With the win, the Warhawks ended a seven-game losing streak, including six straight in league play.

Game 2 of the weekend series is scheduled for Saturday, April 29 at 2 p.m. at the ULM Softball Complex as the Warhawks look to secure their second Sun Belt series win of the season.

Kennedy Page slides around an attempted tag at home as ULM cuts its deficit to 4-3 in the sixth against Georgia State Friday on an RBI single by Korie Kreps.
