BOONE, N.C. – Shawn Dalton Weatherbee homered,
Zack Floyd hit a go-ahead 2-RBI double,
Carson Orton threw three scoreless and hitless innings out of the bullpen and
Justin Robinson nailed down the save as ULM rallied from a 2-run deficit to sweep a weather-shortened two-game series at App State, 3-2, Saturday afternoon at Beaver Field at Jim and Bettie Smith Stadium.
With the victory, ULM (12-20 overall, 3-8 Sun Belt Conference) won its first Sun Belt Conference series of the season and just its second series of the year. It also marked the first back-to-back wins for ULM since Feb. 19 and 21, when the Warhawks won the series finale vs. Bradley and the first game of a double midweek at Mississippi State. It was the first SBC series loss for App State (16-13, 6-5).
The final game of the series was canceled due to SBC travel rules. The second game of the proposed doubleheader needed to start prior to 4 p.m. EDT/3 p.m. CDT, but the first game did not finish until after that time due to a 35-minute weather delay in the sixth inning. Rain prevented the two teams from playing on Friday after ULM picked up a 12-3 win on Thursday.
With temperatures hovering in the upper 30s and playing through a steady rain, App State built a 2-0 lead as Luke Drumheller's RBI single in the third inning scored Andrew Terrell and Golston Gillespie scored on a wild pitch in the fourth inning.
ULM didn't get on the board until the sixth inning, when Weatherbee belted a solo home run over the right-field wall. It was ULM's second hit of the game, and first since Floyd's leadoff double to open the game. Shortly after, umpires called for a rain delay, which lasted approximately 35 minutes.
After the delay, ULM put a pair on the board in the seventh inning.
Cardell Thibodeaux and
Jayson Zmejkoski drew back-to-back walks to open the inning and moved to second and third on
Carson Jones' sacrifice bunt. Floyd followed with a double down the left-field line, scoring both Thibodeaux and Zmejkoski for the 3-2 lead.
Carson Orton and
Justin Robinson made the lead stand up. Orton (3-3) came on in the sixth inning and threw three shutout and hitless innings, allowing one walk with three strikeouts to pick up his third win. Robinson pitched a scoreless ninth inning with a walk and a strikeout to earn his second save.
Chipper Menard worked 4 1/3 innings in the start, allowing two runs on five hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
Skylar Brooks (0-1) took the loss out of the bullpen for App, allowing two runs on one hit with two walks over 2/3 of an inning. Bradley Wilson threw 5 2/3 innings in the start, giving up one run on three hits with three walks and six strikeouts.
Floyd had two doubles and two RBIs to lead ULM, while CJ Boyd had two hits for App.
ULM returns to action at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Louisiana Tech.
