ULM Earns Split Saturday Against Herd; Ends Nation’s Second-Longest Winning Streak

MONROE, La. – ULM softball earned a doubleheader split against Sun Belt Conference newcomer Marshall on Saturday, April 8. In Game 1, Marshall put together a three-run rally in the fifth inning and held on for a 4-3 victory over the Warhawks. After the heartbreaking loss, ULM flipped the script in Game 2, overcoming a 3-1 deficit with a four-run fifth inning, highlighted by Kennedy Page's two-run double that gave the Warhawks the lead for good at 5-3 while also ending the nation's second-longest NCAA Division I winning streak at 23 games.

"Yesterday was a tough day for ULM softball (a 13-2 loss in six innings)," ULM head coach Molly Fichtner said. "I am proud of them to be able to turn the page 12 hours later and show up ready to go. They put themselves in a position to win both ball games today. Marshall has had an incredible year and there's no doubt that was a great win for our team and program."

ULM has a midweek non-conference game at Mississippi Valley State on Wednesday, April 12 at 1 p.m. before playing host to its second-straight home Sun Belt series against Southern Miss (Friday, April 14-Sunday, April 16).

Game 1 Recap: Marshall 4, ULM 3
Marshall parlayed two walks and two hits into three runs in the top of the fifth inning as the Thundering Herd rallied for a 4-3 victory over ULM in Game 1 of a doubleheader Saturday, April 8 while extending the nation's second-longest NCAA Division I winning streak to 23 games. The Herd also secured the series win over the Warhawks, improving its Sun Belt Conference record to a perfect 9-0.

For the second-straight game, Marshall (33-3, 9-0 Sun Belt) opened the scoring, scratching out a run in the top of the first off ULM starting pitcher Adrianna Chavarria. Alex Coleman led off the game with a bunt single to the pitcher and promptly stole second base. After Chavarria struck out Sydney Bickel swinging, Autumn Owen took the first pitch of her at-bat straight back up the middle for an RBI single, scoring Coleman from second, as the Herd took a 1-0 lead.

Marshall threatened to extend its lead in the third, but Chavarria stranded two base runners as Korie Kreps snagged a line drive down the right-field line.

After Chavarria retired the side in order for the second time in the game in the top of the fourth, ULM's offense went to work against Marshall starting pitcher Savannah Rice. The Warhawks had stranded a base runner in each of the first three innings. Jacelyn Buck opened the fourth with a single up the middle. With two outs, Kennedy Johnson drove a 2-2 pitch over the center-field wall for a two-run homer as ULM (19-21, 3-8) took its first lead in the series at 2-1. It marked Johnson's third home run of the season and her first since Feb. 25 against Cleveland State (a span of 21 games).

The Herd quickly regained the momentum in the top of the fourth as Brooklyn Ulrich blasted Chavarria's first offering of the frame over the right-center field wall to tie the score at 2-2. Coleman drew a five-pitch walk and Bickel coaxed a seven-pitch walk. With runners at second and third with one out, Grace Chelemen picked up an RBI with an infield single to first base that scored Coleman as Marshall reclaimed the lead at 3-2. Gianni Hulett came out of the bullpen to record the final two outs of the frame, but Bub Feringa's RBI groundout to second base extended the Herd advantage to 4-2.

The Warhawks got a one-out single to center from Campbell Selman in the bottom of the sixth but failed to score.

Hulett set Marshall down in order in the top of the seventh.

With one out, Bickel stole second and Grace Chelemen coaxed a six-pitch walk. Feringa lined out to left field for the second out, but Bickel tagged up and advanced to third base. Rielly Lucas delivered an RBI single to right field, scoring Bickel from third to tie the score at 1-all. Camryn Michallas followed with another RBI single to right field that scored Chelemen as the Herd grabbed a 2-1 advantage. Pinch hitter Abby Darnely came through with Marshall's third consecutive hit, a single up the middle, that scored Lucas and extended the lead to 3-1. With two on and two outs, Chavarria took over for Hulett in the circle and recorded the final out of the frame.

ULM (20-21, 4-8 Sun Belt) displayed its mettle in the bottom of the fifth. Alexis Chavez led off the frame with a triple down the left-field line and scored on catcher's interference as Lourdes Bacon reached on a fielder's choice. Bacon stole second, advanced to third base on Ard's flyout to center field and scored the game-tying run (3-3) on Edwards' RBI groundout. Jacelyn Buck drew a seven-pitch walk and Campbell Selman followed with a single down the right-field line. With Buck at third and Selman at second (advanced on the throw from the right fielder), Page lined a 3-2 pitcher over the left fielder's head that scored Buck and Campbell as the Warhawks regained the lead for good at 5-3.
