ULM Softball Drops Sun Belt Series Opener at Ragin’ Cajuns, 5-1

LAFAYETTE, La. – Meghan Schorman allowed one run over 6 2/3 innings while Sophie Piskos and Lauren Allred provided a pair of solo home runs as the No. 24 Ragin' Cajuns clinched the Sun Belt Conference regular-season title and the No. 1 seed in next week's league tournament with a 5-1 win over ULM Thursday (May 4) at Lamson Park.

ULM scratched out its only run of the game in the top of the first. Campbell Selman doubled to left center with one out, and two batters later, Andie Edwards lifted an RBI single down the right-field line that scored Selman as the Warhawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead.

Louisiana Lafayette (41-13, 20-2 Sun Belt) answered in the bottom of the frame. With two outs, Piskos drove a 2-0 offering from ULM starting pitcher Maddie Nichols over the center-field wall to tie the score at 1-1.

Schorman, who surrendered two hits in the top of the first, was in command the rest of the night, retiring nine in a row during one stretch. She didn't permit another hit until Lourdes Bacon led off the sixth inning with a double to left center. Schorman also received plenty of offensive support as the Cajuns scored at least one run in each of the first four innings.

The Ragin' Cajuns took the lead for good in the bottom of the second. Karly Heath opened the frame with a double to left center and Jourdyn Campbell followed with an infield single to third base that advanced Heath to third. After Campbell stole second, Maddie Hayden recorded ULL's third-straight hit, a single to left field, that scored Heath for a 2-1 advantage. Adrianna Chavarria took over for Nichols in the circle and record three consecutive outs to end the inning, but Victoria Valdez's sacrifice fly to left field – caught in foul territory by Bacon – gave the Cajuns a 3-1 lead as Campbell scored from third.

With two outs in the third, Allred's solo blast to center field, off Chavarria, extended ULL's lead to 4-1.

Hayden reached on a bunt single to third base to open the fourth. Gianni Hulett relieved Chavarria to became ULM's third pitcher and promptly recorded an out as Valdez grounded out to first base unassisted, moving Hayden into scoring position. Cecilia Vasquez followed with a ground-rule double to center field, scoring Hayden from second base, as the Cajuns built a 5-1 advantage.

Schorman (14-6) surrendered three hits over 6 2/3 innings with one walk and nine strikeouts.

Nichols (2-2) worked an inning-plus and allowed three runs on four hits with one walk and no strikeouts. Hulett pitched three scoreless innings in relief, permitting only one hit with no walks and one strikeout.

The Ragin' Cajuns outhit the Warhawks, 8-5, with four of those going for extra bases (two doubles and two home runs). ULM (24-28, 7-15) stranded four base runners.

Game 2 of the final Sun Belt regular-season series is scheduled for Friday, May 5 at 6 p.m. at Lamson Park.
