NEW ORLEANS - The ULM volleyball team completed their first sweep of the season when they bested Southern 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-18) on the first day of the New Orleans Invitational at the Human Performance Center.
In the first set, the two teams traded blows in a back-and-forth contest. With the Jaguars (0-4 overall) leading by one, the Warhawks (2-7 overall) went on a 6-1 scoring run to take a four-point lead. Southern didn't go down quietly and scored seven points in a row to retake the lead. With the score at 22-20, the Warhawks scored the remaining five points to take the set.
Set two started much like set one with no clear advantage between the two teams. ULM held a four-point lead before a 6-2 scoring run by the Jaguars tied the game. The Warhawks answered with a 5-1 scoring run to reclaim control. A final kill by Logan Jeffus gave ULM its second set win.
With the score at 8-5 in favor of the Warhawks, Southern put together an 8-3 scoring run and took the lead. ULM scored three straight points twice to put the game at 20-18, and they ended the match with a final 6-0 run.
The 3-0 sweep over Southern breaks a six-game losing skid that began on August 26.
Bailey Roberson made history by passing the 1,000 mark in assists with 17. She's the fifth ULM player to do so in the 25-point rally scoring era (2008-present).
Jeffus had a team-leading nine kills, and Cameron Rogers led the team in digs with 18.
The Warhawks continue play at 12 p.m. Saturday when they play the host team in New Orleans.
