HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison hit its final nine field goal attempts of the first half and turned a 10-point deficit into a 12-point halftime lead en route to an 89-70 win over ULM Thursday night at Atlantic Union Bank Center.
JMU (16-2 overall, 4-2 Sun Belt Conference) opened the game 5-of-20 from the field before hitting its final nine shots of the first half and hitting 26 of its final 41 shots (63%) in the game to finish at 51% (31-of-61) for the contest. After missing its first nine 3-pointers of the night, JMU hit 16 of its final 30 3-point attempts to finish at 41% (16-of-39) for the game.
ULM (4-12, 0-6) used a 9-0 run in the early part of the game to take a 16-6 lead on a fastbreak layup by
Jalen Bolden with 13:00 left in the half, forcing a JMU timeout. The Dukes closed within five, 16-11, on a 3-pointer by Raekwon Horton, which was JMU's first trey of the night. The Warhawks extended the lead back to 10 at 22-12 on
Tyreese Watson's jumper with 8:21 to go before halftime.
The Dukes outscored ULM 28-6 for the remainder of the half, with the Warhawks hitting only one of its final 10 shot attempts of the half. JMU's run of nine-straight made field goals began with Horton's 3-pointer with 7:26 left before halftime. Julien Wooden hit the first of his career-high seven 3-pointers on the night to bring the Dukes back within one, 24-23, with 4:57 left. JMU took the lead for good on two free throws by Terrence Edwards Jr. with 3:23 to go. The Dukes hit three 3-pointers in the final 1:24 of the half, with two by Edwards and one by Horton, to quickly expand the lead to 14, 40-26.
Jerry Ngopot's jumper from the free throw line cut the gap to 12 at halftime, 40-28.
JMU built as much as a 31-point lead in the second half, 83-52, on a trey by Edwards with 4:37 to play.
Wooden led JMU with a career high 31 points, while Edwards added 17 and Horton had 15.
Savion Gallion paced four Warhawks in double figures with 16 points, with 15 coming in the second half.
Makai Willis added a career high 15 points, while
Tyreese Watson also matched his career best with 14 points.
Jalen Bolden chipped in 12 points.
ULM shot 44% (24-of-55) from the floor and shot 31% (4-of-13) from 3-point range.
The Warhawks wrap up the Virginia road swing at 7 p.m. EST/6 p.m. CST Saturday at Old Dominion.
