ULM Soccer Falls 3-2 in Gritty Match at Texas State

The Warhawks were on the verge of a comeback, but fell just short in the final minutes.

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The ULM soccer team (8-5-2, 2-2-2 SBC) took their second Sun Belt loss to Texas State (8-3-4, 4-0-2 SBC) in a gritty match on Sunday that boiled down to the final minutes. Down one at the half, the Warhawks were on the verge of a comeback after scoring two goals for the draw in the second half. Unfortunately, a last-minute game winner by the Bobcats kept Texas State in the win column.

The first half leaned in favor of the Bobcats, as they maintained 57% possession and scored the lone goal of the first 45 minutes. A Warhawk foul gave Texas State the opportunity to strike first in the 13th minute. While ULM attempted to find the equalizer, goalkeeper Caitlyn Draper posted three saves to maintain the lead, 1-0. Jennifer Handy also recorded a handful of saves, including a penalty kick by the Bobcats.

The second half started similarly to the first, with Texas State finding the back of the net again with a penalty kick in the 52nd minute. Down two, the Warhawks worked to claw their way back. Just five minutes after the penalty kick, Skylar Blaise took the ball down herself, cutting the lead in half and tipping the scales in ULM's favor. This was Blaise's sixth goal of the season and 10th of her career. In the 77th minute, Bernadett Stefan found the equalizer, assisted by Giulia Franco. The goal was Stefan's second goal of the season and fifth of her career. Franco found her third assist of the season and of her career to make the score 2-2. Six minutes later, in the 83rd minute, Texas State found the back of the net after yellow card on ULM and a free kick, ending the match 3-2.

The Warhawks led in shots, 13-11, with Ashley Washburn leading the team with four. Stefan led in shots on goal with two, adding to the tally of six. Texas State had four saves to ULM's two and six corner kicks to ULM's five. The Warhawks had three yellow cards in the match and the Bobcats racked up two.

Next up, the Warhawks will travel to Georgia State to take on the Panthers on Friday. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. CST in Atlanta.
