Warhawks Fall at South Alabama

The Jags pulled away in the second half and snapped ULM's three-game conference winning streak.

MOBILE, Ala. -- The ULM football team (5-2, 3-1 Sun Belt Conference) held a 17-12 lead at halftime, but South Alabama (4-4, 3-1 SBC) pulled away in the second half and snapped the Warhawks' three-game conference winning streak with a 46-17 win at Hancock Whitney Stadium in Mobile, Ala.

"We made some mistakes in the second half and didn't capitalize on opportunities," said ULM Head Coach Bryant Vincent. "I thought we prepared well and came ready to play, but we didn't do enough in the second half. We have to own it, and we have to move forward."

Two Jaguars eclipsed the 100-yard rushing mark as the team tallied 355 yards on the ground. Kentrel Bullock was South Alabama's leading rusher with 141 yards and two touchdowns while Fluff Bothwell added 119 rushing yards and a pair of scores. Gio Lopez completed 18 passes for 168 yards. Defensively, Dalton Hughes and Blayne Myrick were the Jags' leading tacklers with seven tackles each. Wesley Miller and Ty Goodwill both picked off a pass.

The Warhawks rushed for 238 yards, led by Ahmad Hardy's fourth game eclipsing 100 rushing yards and Hunter Herring's 72 rushing yards on four carries. Herring broke free for a 44-yard rushing touchdown in the second quarter to pull ULM in the lead. James Jones added 39 yards while Aidan Armenta picked up 20. Armenta completed 11 passes on 23 attempts for 149 yards and one touchdown with two interceptions. He connected with Davon Wells for a 51-yard touchdown reception to account for ULM's first points of the day. Javon Campbell was ULM's leading receiver with two catches for 77 yards.

Defensively, Wydett Williams Jr. recorded a game-high 12 tackles and added a fumble recovery and a pass breakup. Carl Fauntroy and Carl Glass Jr. both recorded seven tackles each. Jaylan Ware forced a fumble and made five stops.

After a ULM three-and-out to start the game, South Alabama posted seven points on its first drive of the game following an eight play, 70-yard drive that was capped off by Bullock's first score of the game on a four-yard rush. On third and one of ULM's next drive, Herring sliced through a hole and picked up a first down on a five-yard carry. On the next play, Armenta completed a deep pass to Wells for 51 yards and a score and the Warhawks evened the score, 7-7. Both teams were held scoreless the remainder of the opening quarter.

On 3rd and 2 early in the second quarter, Herring's number was called again, and he delivered with a 20-yard first-down pickup. Three plays later, the Warhawks faced another 3rd down and Herring checked into the game. Herring bolted through the Jags' defense and sprinted 44 yards to the end zone for the score. Max Larson split the uprights and the Warhawks led, 14-7.

On South Alabama's next drive, the Jags marched the football 73 yards and were closing in on ULM's end zone. On 3rd and goal from the Warhawks' one-yard line, Ware powered through the line and punched the football out of the Jaguars' running back and Williams Jr. scooped up the fumble to end South Alabama's scoring opportunity.

On ULM's next drive, an errant snap on a punt led to the football going out of the back of the Warhawks' end zone, and the score was 14-9 in favor of the Warhawks. Travor Randle broke up Lopez's pass on a 3rd and 4 on the ensuing South Alabama drive, and the Jags settled with a 48-yard field goal to close the gap to two.

With 1:08 left in the half, Armenta found Campbell down the seam for a 44-yard completion that set ULM up in Jags' territory. Armenta scrambled for 17 yards and ULM entered the red zone with less than a minute remaining. The Warhawks were unable to move the sticks, and Larson converted a 28-yard field goal as time expired in the first half with ULM leading, 17-12.

South Alabama responded and recaptured the lead after a nine play, 74-yard scoring drive that ended with a Bothwell three-yard touchdown. On the first play of ULM's next drive, Armenta's pass was tipped at the line of scrimmage and Miller secured the interception for a key turnover. South Alabama capitalized on the turnover as Bullock found the end zone for the second time on a 13-yard carry to put the Jags up, 25-17. After a three and out by the Warhawks, Lopez made it three-straight drives ending with touchdowns for the Jags with a five-yard rushing touchdown to make it 32-17 at the end of the third.

The Warhawks entered the red zone at the start of the fourth quarter and converted two fourth downs to keep the drive alive. ULM faced another fourth down with goal to go from the seven. Armenta's pass intended for Artis Cole was incomplete, and the Jags recorded a fourth-down stop. South Alabama continued to find success in the rushing game and increased its lead to 39-17 after a Bothwell rushing touchdown and tacked on seven more following a rushing score by McReynolds, sealing a 46-17 win.

The ULM football team continues its road trip next Saturday (Nov. 2) at Marshall. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET./2:30 p.m. CT from Joan C. Edwards Stadium in Huntington, W.Va.

"This one is over," said Vincent. "We have to learn from it, we have to grow from it and we have to own it. We need to get ready to play Marshall, a really good football team, on the road."
