MONROE, La. – The ULM soccer team (9-8-2, 3-5-2 SBC) shut out Southern Miss (3-7-5, 2-3-5 SBC) on Thursday morning, snapping a six-game unbeaten streak for the Golden Eagles. The Warhawks started hot, scoring just eleven minutes into the contest and continued to build from there.
The first half started with both teams firing on all cylinders, trying to fight for the first score. Back-to-back corner kicks for the Warhawks by
Mara Grutkamp gave
Beth Strutton the opportunity to send a header behind the goalkeeper, giving ULM the 1-0 lead. This was Strutton's second goal of the season as the only freshman to factor in points for ULM.
Jennifer Handy claimed two saves in the two minutes following the goal, as Southern Miss continued to fight for the equalizer. After a corner kick for the Golden Eagles,
Giulia Franco took control, scoring her fourth goal of the season. Franco's goal was also assisted by Grutkamp, who was credited with her sixth assist of the season and 24
th of her career. The Golden Eagles were unable to find the back of the net in the first 45 minutes, giving the Warhawks a 2-0 lead at the half.
ULM opened the second half the same as the first, with an early goal from
Skylar Blaise. A foul on Southern Miss' Adaira Nakano gave Blaise the opportunity to capitalize, making it a 3-0 lead for the Warhawks. This was Blaise's seventh goal of the season, her 11
th in her career. The goal was assisted by
Ally Richardson, who tallied her first assist of the season and second of her career. Through multiple fouls and yellow cards, ULM maintained their three-score lead, claiming a shutout to close the regular season.
The match got gritty towards the end, as three Warhawks and three Golden Eagles were handed yellow cards. ULM led in shots, 13-11, with Blaise leading the team with six, three on target. Southern Miss led in corner kicks with six and fouls with 16. Both teams tied with six saves apiece.
With two assists in this match, Grutkamp is has now tied first place in career points (55) and assists (24). Handy tied her season-high six saves and is now second in season shutouts. As a team, this is the eighth shutout recorded this season, giving the 2024-25 Warhawks sole possession of the season shutout record.
While this is the end of the regular season, the Warhawks will find out Thursday night if they will travel to Foley, Alabama this weekend to compete in the Sun Belt Tournament. Depending on the other Sun Belt scores, the Warhawks may still be fighting.
