MONROE, La. – The ULM soccer team (7-4-2, 1-1-2 SBC) took a draw against James Madison (5-3-3, 3-0-1 SBC), giving the Dukes their first non-win in conference play. Both teams started out hot, but neither could find the game-winning goal.
The match started strong offensively, with the Dukes striking first in the fifth minute of the match. The lead didn't last for long, however, as
Skylar Blaise knocked the goal in the back of the net, her fourth on the season.
Bernadett Stefan was credited with the assist, her second of the season and her fourth in her career.
Blaise was not finished, knocking her second goal of the match in the 32
nd minute, her fifth of the season and ninth of her career. This was Blaise's second brace of her career, the first coming against Texas State last season. The Warhawks tried to hold onto the lead, but James Madison scored the equalizer just two minutes later, making the score 2-2 at the half.
In the second half, both teams pulled out all the stops defensively, goalkeeper
Jennifer Handy tallying two saves. A close call in the final minute of the match by Blaise came close to sealing the win for the Warhawks, but it fell just right of the net. The final 45 minutes fell just short for both teams, ending the match in a draw.
ULM and James Madison tied in shots with 10 each, with the Handy claiming three saves to James Madison's one. The Warhawks also led in corner kicks, 3-1. The match found the Warhawks in foul trouble, as they were credited with 17 to the Dukes' eight. Blaise led ULM in shots with five, two being on goal.
Next week, ULM soccer will play the final match in their three-game homestand, taking on the Arkansas State Red Wolves at Brown Stadium. Kickoff will be at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
