Warhawks Drop Road Contest to No. 25 Georgia Tech

ULM returns to Fant-Ewing Coliseum on Tuesday evening to host Mississippi State.

ATLANTA -- The ULM women's basketball team was held to 25.8% shooting from the field and committed a season-high 25 turnovers as the Warhawks fell to No. 25 Georgia Tech on Wednesday (Dec. 11) afternoon, 97-37, at McCamish Pavilion in Atlanta.

The Yellow Jackets, who are out to their best start in over 45 seasons, improved to 10-0 after shooting 49.3% from the field and cashing in 14 3-point buckets. Georgia Tech limited ULM (3-5) to just three 3-pointers in the game and outrebounded the Warhawks 48-36.

ULM was led by Meloney Thames, who reached double figures for the fifth time this season with 10 points. Thames was the only Warhawk to connect on multiple 3-pointers and contributed three rebounds, one block and one steal. Laila Walker scored seven points and pulled down a trio of rebounds. Jakayla Johnson posted five points and secured seven rebounds to go along with three assists while Nya Valentine finished with five points and three assists. Asjha Leake grabbed a team-high eight boards.

For Georgia Tech, 11 different players scored in the game. Rusne Augustinaite drained five 3-pointers and recorded a game-high 17 points. Dani Carnegie, Ines Noguero and Kara Dunn also reached double figures for the home team. Tonie Morgan and Ariadna Termis combined to pass 15 of Georgia Tech's 27 assists on the afternoon. Zoesha Smith hauled in nine rebounds while Carnegie and Kayla Blackshear registered eight apiece.

A Sakyia White steal turned into points on the opposite end when White made a layup on a pass from Johnson to tie the score at 2-2. Johnson knocked down her first 3-point attempt of the afternoon that gave ULM a 5-4 lead with 7:45 left in the opening quarter. The Georgia Tech offense found its groove as the Yellow Jackets scored 19 unanswered points in a span of over four minutes to control a 23-5 advantage. The run included four Georgia Tech 3-pointers and five layups. Walker ended the Georgia Tech scoring spree with a layup and scored on her second field goal attempt with a made jumper with less than two minutes in the first quarter. Valentine swooshed a free throw before time expired in the first quarter and Georgia Tech led 28-10 after one.

The Yellow Jackets' defense held the Warhawks scoreless for the first seven minutes of the second quarter. Georgia Tech increased its lead to 45-10 with just over two minutes remaining. Brikayla Gray scored ULM's first points of the second frame on a jumper and Katlyn Manuel added another bucket for the Warhawks as Georgia Tech padded its lead to 53-14 at the end of the first half.

Thames knocked down a pair of 3-pointers within a minute to generate a 6-0 scoring run for the Warhawks early in the third quarter. Georgia Tech managed to close the third quarter on an 11-4 scoring run and led by 48 at the end of three quarters of play.

A made jump shot from Valentine and a bucket by Thames were the first points of the final quarter for the Warhawks. Walker and Gray finished layups as ULM trailed 89-35 in the closing three minutes of the game. Valentine made her second basket of the fourth quarter for ULM's final points. The Yellow Jackets buried two additional 3-pointers before the final horn.

ULM will play its first game inside Fant-Ewing Coliseum in over a month on Tuesday (Dec. 17) evening as the Warhawks host Mississippi State with tip-off set for 5 p.m.
