Warhawks Race Past Fighting Hawks in Five Innings

Carys Platt and Meagan Brown both tallied multiple hits as ULM earned a run rule victory.

YOUNGSVILLE, La. – The ULM softball team (3-2) concluded play at the Mardi Gras Mambo in a big way with a run-rule 8-0 victory over North Dakota (1-4) on Sunday (Feb. 11) at the Youngsville Softball Complex in Youngsville, La.

Carys Platt and Meagan Brown both recorded multi-hit games while Victoria Abrams picked up her second win of the season after throwing 3.2 scoreless innings with two strikeouts.

The Warhawks plated four runs in the bottom of the second inning, which started with an Ashlan Ard walk and a Morgan Brown base hit to center. Jacelyn Buck walked with one out to load the bases. ULM scored a pair of runs when Madison Blount drove in Taylor Broddick on a fielder's choice and Brown crossed home plate after an error committed by the Fighting Hawks. ULM added two more runs with two outs when Meagan Brown cranked a triple to left field that brought home Blount and Platt singled on a bunt to score Meagan Brown.

Following an Abrams strikeout to end the top half of the third, Ard reached base for the second time with a base hit up the middle in the bottom of the third. With two outs, Ard stole second base and Elle Carter and Buck walked. Ard capitilized on a North Dakota error and scored to increase ULM's lead to 5-0. In the fourth inning, Ard drove in Platt on a sacrifice fly, and ULM led 6-0 after four innings.

The Fighting Hawks loaded the bases with one out in the fifth inning. Bristin Bordeau worked around the bases loaded jam and induced a pair of fly outs to preserve the shutout and keep ULM in the lead, 6-0. Buck doubled with one out in the bottom of the fifth and Madelyn Fletcher delivered a pinch hit single to put runners at the corners. Fletcher stole second and Buck scored on an error, and ULM needed just one more run to capture the win. Meagan Brown's second hit of the day placed the winning run at third with one out. Fletcher crossed home plate for the walkoff win thanks to a North Dakota error and ULM won its final game of the weekend, 8-0 in five innings.

The Warhawks totaled nine hits in 21 at bats with seven different Warhawks collected hits at the plate, led by Platt and Brown, who tallied two hits apiece. Ard and Blount both drove in a run while Buck and Meagan Brown poked extra base hits. In the circle, Abrams and Bordeau combined for a shutout and allowed just three hits.

The ULM softball team will play a doubleheader versus Alcorn State in the Warhawks' home opener on Wednesday (Feb. 14) starting at 4 p.m. in Monroe.
