Abrams Tosses Second Complete Game Shutout of the Season in ULM's 1-0 Win Over Lions

Victoria Abrams led ULM to a 1-0 win over Lindenwood before the Warhawks fell to Tech at the Warhawk Invitational.

MONROE, La. – Victoria Abrams tossed her second complete game shutout of the year in the ULM softball team's (6-3) 1-0 win over Lindenwood (2-4) before the Warhawks dropped the final game of the day to Louisiana Tech (4-0) on the first day of the Warhawk Invitational at the ULM Softball Complex in Monroe, La.

Game One – ULM 1, Lindenwood 0
Abrams struck out two Lions in the top of the first inning after an error. ULM went down in order to complete the first inning. Abrams kept fooling hitters in the second and racked up two more punch outs. Meagan Brown led off the bottom half of the second with a hit through the right side and stole second with one out. Brooklin Lippert set up runners at the corners with one out and Madison Blount loaded the bases after a walk. Lindenwood escaped the bases loaded jam and both teams were scoreless after two innings.

The Lions threatened to push across a run in the top of the third with two outs, but Andie Edwards cut down a runner attempting to score at the plate for the final out. With no score in the fifth, Lindenwood had runners at first and second with one out. Abrams stepped up with back-to-back strikeouts and maintained the shutout. Lourdes Bacon won a foot race to the bag for an infield single in the fifth, but the Lions held ULM scoreless as the game moved to the sixth.

Following a clean inning by Abrams in the circle, Carys Platt reached base on a Lindenwood error. Carter followed with a bunt base hit and set up runners at first and second with zero outs. Morgan Brown moved the runners with a sacrifice bunt and her sister, Meagan, walked to load the bases full of Warhawks. Edwards lifted a high fly ball to right field that scored Platt for the game's first run. Lindenwood managed to draw a walk with two outs in the top of the seventh. Abrams recorded the final out of the game on a popup to Carter and the Warhawks won the pitcher's duel, 1-0.

Abrams improved her record to 3-0 with the win and twirled her second complete game shutout of the season. She sat down six Lions on strikeouts and allowed just three hits in her dominant outing. Offensively, four different Warhawks finished with hits including Carter, Meagan Brown, Lippert and Bacon. Meagan Brown also swiped a base and Edwards had the lone RBI of the game.

Game Two – Louisiana Tech 5, ULM 2
Maddie Nichols struck out the side in the first inning and worked around a two-out single. Platt kickstarted the Warhawks offense with a bunt single and moved to second on a Louisiana Tech error. After Platt tagged up and slid in safely at third on a flyout, she scored when Morgan Brown drilled a single up the middle to put ULM in the lead.

Nichols completed two scoreless innings and held the Bulldogs to zero runs through three innings. Carter drew a two-out walk in the bottom of the third but would not score as ULM maintained a 1-0 edge. The Bulldogs grabbed the lead in the top of the fourth after scoring three. Meagan Brown started the bottom of the fourth with a hit but was left on base to wrap up the fourth. Tech plated one run in both the fifth and sixth innings to extend its lead to 5-1.

Morgan Brown chalked up her second hit of the game to start the sixth and Meagan Brown followed with a walk. The Bulldogs turned a key double play that left a runner at second base with a pair of outs. After a wild pitch, Meagan Brown crossed home plate from a Louisiana Tech error, as ULM trimmed the Bulldogs' lead to 5-2. Nichols returned to the circle and struck out three in the seventh and kept the deficit to three. ULM went down in order in the bottom of the seventh, and Louisiana Tech took the first matchup between the two teams, 5-2.

The Bulldogs compiled 14 hits in the game led by Caroline Easom going 4-for-4 with one run and one RBI. Alexis Gilio, Claire Raley and Aubree Seaney all had multi-hit games. For the Warhawks, Morgan Brown accumulated a pair of hits and recorded her first multi-hit game of her college career. Platt and Meagan Brown also had hits for ULM. Nichols fired a season-high eight punch outs.

ULM will have a rematch versus Louisiana Tech tomorrow at 2 p.m. before facing Lindenwood at 5 p.m. in the second day of action at the Warhawk Invite.
