Warhawk Rally Falls Short on Senior Day vs. Troy, 84-78

MONROE, La. – Christyon Eugene led four Troy players in double figures with 21 points as the Trojans spoiled ULM's Senior Day, 84-78, Saturday afternoon at Fant-Ewing Coliseum.

Troy (19-10 overall, 12-4 Sun Belt Conference) built as much as a 19-point second half lead with ULM (11-16, 6-10) getting as close as five points with possession down the stretch.

Eugene hit 7-of-10 shots from the field and hit 2-of-4 from 3-point range while adding four rebounds, four assists and two steals to pace the Trojans. Myles Rigsby added 19 points while draining 12-of-14 free throw attempts, Thomas Dowd picked up 14 points and Tayton Conerway chipped in 12 points.

ULM's three seniors on the court led the team in scoring. Tyreke Locure tallied 20 points while adding six steals, three rebounds and three assists. Savion Gallion scored a career-high 19 points (7-of-10 field goal attempts) and Nika Metskhvarishvili had 18 points, seven rebounds and three assists. A fourth senior, Johnnie Williams IV, was recognized prior to the game but is redshirting this season with plans to play elsewhere next year.

The Warhawks led by three, 11-8, on Jerry Ngopot's layup with 13:47 left in the first half. Troy responded with a 9-0 run to take the lead for good, going ahead 17-11 on Conerway's 3-pointer. ULM cut the gap to four, 22-18, on free throws by Makai Willis before the Trojans used a 7-0 run to take its first double-digit lead, 29-18, on a jumper by Conerway at the 5:40 mark. Troy pushed the lead to as much as 17, 42-25, on Eugene's triple with 3:05 to go in the half. ULM closed within 14 at 45-31 and again at 47-33 on free throws by Tyreese Watson before Troy picked up the final points of the half to lead 49-33 at the break.

The Trojans lead peaked at 19, 54-35, on Rigsby's jumper in the lane with 17:57 to play. ULM cut the deficit to single digits at eight, 63-55, on a jumper by Locure with 11:34 remaining. Troy kept ULM just out of reach of the lead though, with the lead fluctuating between seven and 10 points for much of the next six-plus minutes. The Warhawks pulled within five, 74-69, on free throws by Gallion with 4:15 left, and a Troy turnover on the ensuing possession gave ULM a chance to pull within one score. However, a turnover ended the possession and the Warhawks never had another chance to get within one score as the Trojans held on for the 84-78 win.

ULM returns to the floor at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Texas State.
