Warhawks Surge Past Lumberjacks 13-2 in Midweek Action

ULM scored 13 runs in four innings and secured a win in seven innings.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The ULM baseball team (5-4) scored 13 unanswered runs in the final four innings and earned a 13-2 win in seven innings over Stephen F. Austin (3-7) on Wednesday (Feb. 28) at Pilgrim's Park in Nacogdoches, Texas.
 
After the Lumberjacks jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a two-run homer in the first, ULM evened the score in the fourth inning. Hasani Johnson doubled to right center and scored Shawn Dalton Weatherbee before Easton Winfield delivered an RBI single that scored Johnson. ULM took the lead in the fifth inning when Kade Dupont crossed home plate on an SFA wild pitch. Matt Abshire crushed his first home run of the season with Weatherbee on base and the Warhawks opened up a 5-2 lead through five innings over SFA.
 
Justin Robinson held the Lumberjacks to just two hits over three innings and struck out five. Joey Cirelli pitched a scoreless fifth and the Warhawks maintained their 5-2 lead. ULM's advantage increased to 7-2 when Jake Haggard homered with Michelle Artzberger on base. Cirelli held SFA to a scoreless sixth inning.
 
The Warhawks ripped off six runs in the top of the seventh inning and controlled a double-digit lead. Chenar Brown started the scoring with a pinch hit base knock up the middle that scored Abshire and Ian Montz. Colby Lunsford cashed in another two-RBI hit and plated Winfield and Johnson. Lunsford tacked on another run when he scored on an SFA error. The Warhawks capped off the scoring spree with an Abshire walk that scored Artzberger. Trey Lindsay wrapped up the win for the Warhawks by forcing the Lumberjacks to ground into a double play.
 
ULM compiled 14 hits and powered five extra-base hits. Weatherbee, Abshire and Johnson all had doubles while Haggard and Abshire both generated home runs. Five Warhawks registered multiple hits including Winfield, Lunsford, Haggard, Abshire and Johnson. Abshire led the team with three RBIs. Winfield, Haggard and Abshire all swiped one base.
 
The Warhawks will h a host a three-game series at Lou St. Amant Field versus Incarnate Word beginning on Friday (March 1) at 6 p.m.
