MONROE, La. -- The ULM softball team (15-5) erased a two-run deficit in the sixth inning and rallied to take game one versus Nicholls (11-9) on Friday (March 1) night at the ULM Softball Complex in Monroe, La.
With the score tied in the bottom of the sixth,
Jacelyn Buck singled up the middle with two outs to score
Taylor Broddick for the go-ahead run.
Seven different Warhawks finished with hits in the game.
Lourdes Bacon reached base safely twice with a hit and a walk.
Carys Platt singled and started the rally in the sixth inning, adding a run and an RBI.
Andie Edwards generated the Warhawks' only extra-base hit with a double in the sixth that scored Platt.
Meagan Brown,
Kelsey Giddens and
Elle Carter also finished with base hits.
Victoria Abrams earned the win in a relief appearance. Abrams tossed two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out one. Maddie Nicholls produced a quality start after throwing five innings and striking out four.
After both teams were held scoreless in the first two innings, Nicholls struck first with a sacrifice fly in the top of the third. ULM responded and tied the game in the bottom of the third when Giddens scored on an RBI groundout by Platt. The Colonels recaptured the lead in the fourth inning with a solo home run and tacked on another run in the top of the sixth with an RBI single.
Platt began the bottom of the sixth inning with a base hit to the pitcher. Edwards crushed a double to left field and Platt scampered around the bases and scored to make the score 3-2, with Edwards sliding in safely after the throw went to the plate. On ball four to
Ashlan Ard, the pitch got away from the catcher, and Edwards tied the game by scoring on the wild pitch. Broddick entered the game to run for Ard and moved to second on a wild pitch.
Brooklin Lippert advanced Broddick to third on a sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Buck stepped up and sent an 0-1 pitch into centerfield to score Broddick and give ULM its first lead. Abrams sat Nicholls in order in the seventh inning and gave the Warhawks their sixth-straight win.
The ULM softball team will finish its three-game series versus Nicholls tomorrow (March 2) with a doubleheader. Game one is set to begin at 1 p.m. with game two to follow at 3 p.m.
