MONROE, La. – The first eight batters to the plate reached safely and scored for ULM in the bottom of the first, as the Warhawks exploded for 11 runs in the inning and cruised to a 12-1 win over Alabama A&M to sweep the series from the Bulldogs Sunday afternoon at Lou St. Amant Field.
Easton Winfield and
Colby Lunsford each drew walks to open the bottom of the first before
Michelle Artzberger followed with a single to load the bases.
Jake Haggard hit a double down the left field line to clear the bases for the 3-0 lead.
Bryce Blaser was hit by a pitch and
Shawn Dalton Weatherbee connected for an RBI single to bring in Haggard for the 4-0 advantage.
Jack Clark walked to load the bases for a second time in the inning, and
Matt Abshire picked up a 2-RBI double to extend the lead to 6-0.
Hasani Johnson's sacrifice fly brought in Clark for the 7-0 lead.
Winfield kept it going in the second trip through the order for ULM with an RBI single to plate Abshire. After Lunsford doubled, Artzberger hit a 2-RBI single to stretch the lead to 10-0. ULM capped the scoring in the inning with Blaser's RBI single to bring in Artzberger for the 11-0 lead.
The Warhawks had just two more hits and one more run in the final five offensive innings, with Lunsford earning a one-out single in the third inning and scoring on an error.
Nine different Warhawks saw time on the mound, with
Justin Robinson (2-0) earning the win after throwing a scoreless first inning, allowing one hit with one walk and two strikeouts.
Alabama A&M picked up its only run in the seventh inning as Alex Diaz hit an RBI single to plate Jesus Riera. Diaz had two hits to pace the Bulldogs.
Dustin Hernandez (0-1) took the loss for AAMU, throwing 2/3 of an inning in the start, allowing 11 runs on seven hits with three walks.
ULM continues an eight-game homestand at 4 p.m. Tuesday against Ole Miss.
