MONROE, La. – Luke Lyon allowed one unearned run over seven innings as Troy earned a 7-1 series and Sun Belt Conference opening win over ULM Friday night at Lou St. Amant Field.
Lyon (3-0) scattered seven hits with two strikeouts and one walk in earning the win for Troy (13-6 overall, 1-0 Sun Belt Conference) on the mound. Michael Osmond threw two shutout innings with one strikeout and two walks.
Daniel Gonzalez (1-1) took the loss in the start for ULM (11-7, 0-1), throwing three innings with two runs on six hits with six strikeouts and one walk.
Cam Barlow followed with four-plus innings out of the bullpen, giving up three runs on three hits with two strikeouts and one walk.
Troy threatened immediately in the top of the first as Kole Myers doubled down the right-field line. However, Gonzalez struck out the next three batters to strand Myers on third.
The Trojans grabbed the lead in the top of the second as Tremayne Cobb Jr. led off the inning with a double and scored on Kyle Mock's single. Mock then came home on a two-out RBI single by Aidan Gilroy for the 2-0 lead.
Troy added to the lead in the fifth inning as Brooks Bryan picked up the first of his four RBIs, earning a two-out RBI single to left to plate Myers for the 3-0 advantage.
ULM had its first scoring threat in the bottom of the fifth inning, as
Bryce Blaser led off with a single,
Shawn Dalton Weatherbee followed with a single to center and
Matt Abshire picked up a one-out walk to load the bases. However,
Hasani Johnson grounded into an inning-ending double play as Troy maintained the 3-0 lead.
The Warhawks finally broke through in the bottom of the seventh inning. Blaser hit a one-out single through the right side. With two outs,
Kade Dupont hit into a fielder's choice, but the ball was dropped by the second baseman and everyone was safe on the play.
Matt Abshire made Troy pay for the extended inning, hitting an RBI single to center to bring home Blaser to cut the deficit to 3-1.
Troy responded in the top of the eighth inning as Will Butcher and Bryan opened the inning with back-to-back doubles, and Cobb followed with an RBI single for the 5-1 lead. The Trojans added two more runs in the ninth inning, scoring both on a 2-RBI single by Bryan, which lined off the pitcher,
Dalton Hitt, and deflected into shallow right field.
Bryan led Troy with four hits, including a double, and four RBIs. Cobb added two hits, including a double, with an RBI and Kavanagh had two hits. Blaser and Weatherbee had two hits apiece for ULM to extend their hitting streaks to 11 games each.
Michelle Artzberger had an infield single to extend his reached base streak to 47 games and his hitting streak to 13 games.
Due to impending weather on Sunday, ULM and Troy will wrap up the series with a doubleheader at noon on Saturday at Lou St. Amant Field.
