Warhawks Fall 3-2 to Southeastern Louisiana Wednesday Night

Lourdes Bacon recorded her 10th multi-hit game of the season in Wednesday night's game.

MONROE, La. -- The ULM softball team (19-11) narrowly fell to Southeastern Louisiana (22-6) in its midweek contest on Wednesday (March 20) night at the ULM Softball Complex in Monroe, La.

Victoria Abrams started the game in the circle for the Warhawks and posted a scoreless inning out of the gates despite a SLU two-out hit. Lourdes Bacon laid down a bunt single at the top of the order for the Warhawks and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After a Carys Platt walk, Meagan Brown moved both runners 60 feet with a sacrifice bunt. Andie Edwards, who leads the nation in sacrifice flys, added to her sac fly total and drove in Bacon for the game's first run. After Abrams tossed a 1-2-3 second inning, Madison Blount drew a walk with two outs for ULM, but was stranded to end the second.

The Lions tied the game in the top of the third inning after Ka'Lyn Watson hit an RBI double that made the score 2-1. Bacon singled to the pitcher to begin the bottom half of the third and was moved to second on a Platt sac bunt. SLU recorded a pair of groundouts to end the inning and kept the score tied after three complete innings.

With two outs and the bases loaded in the top of the fourth, Southeastern drew a walk to go ahead, 2-1. Maddie Nichols struck out the next batter to hold SLU to one run. The Lions retired ULM in order in the bottom of the fourth. Nichols sent all three batters to the dugout in the top of the fifth and the score remained 2-1. Madison Blount walked to lead off the fifth for ULM. Taylor Broddick dropped a sacrifice bunt to put pinch runner Kelsey Giddens in scoring position. Southeastern secured the final two outs of the inning and maintained a 2-1 lead after five.

A Lions' solo home run increased the lead to 3-1 in the sixth. Brown hit a double off the left field wall in the bottom of the sixth and later scored on a Maryssa Zenzen RBI groundout that pulled the Warhawks within one. Southeastern loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh, but Nichols sent the game to the bottom half of the seventh after recording a groundout. Jacelyn Buck started a ULM rally in the bottom of the seventh inning with a two-strike single. Giddens advanced pinch runner Brooklin Lippert into scoring position in the next at bat. SLU escaped the jam with a strikeout and a groundout and narrowly won the midweek contest, 3-2.

ULM will welcome South Alabama to Monroe for a three-game Sun Belt series beginning Friday at 6 p.m.
