LAKE CHARLES, La. -- The ULM softball team (17-8) bounced back with a 4-1 win in the final game of the series at McNeese (14-11) on Saturday (March 9) in Lake Charles, La.
The Warhawks wasted no time taking the lead as
Carys Platt singled on a bunt with one out and
Meagan Brown followed with an RBI double for the game's first run. After
Kassidy Giddens fired a 1-2-3 bottom of the first inning,
Maryssa Zenzen led off the second with a base hit. McNeese recorded a double play to end the second, and Giddens registered another scorless inning in the second.
Taylor Broddick started the third with a walk and
Carys Platt singled with one out. Brown racked up her second RBI of the game on an RBI fielder's choice that put the Warhawks up 2-0.
Andie Edwards brought home another ULM run in the third with a sacrifice fly that scored Platt to complete a two-run inning for ULM. The Cowgirls scored an unearned run in the fourth inning, and ULM maintained a 3-1 lead after four.
The Cowgirls had runners on second and third in the fifth inning and had a chance to tie the the game.
Gianni Hulett entered the game from the bullpen and recorded the final outs of the inning to preserve ULM's lead. Edwards added to ULM's lead when she smoked an RBI double that scored Brown to increase the Warhawks' advantage to three runs. Hulett slammed the door and recorded her first save of the season after shutting down the Cowgirls in the final two innings.
Brown and Platt led ULM at the plate with two hits each while Edwards and Zenzen tacked on knocks. Giddens completed 4.1 innings of work and surrendered just three hits without allowing an earned run. Hulett provided 2.2 innings in the circle and secured crucial outs in the final innings of the game for the save.
The ULM softball team continues its road trip on Wednesday when the Warhawks visit Mississippi State in Starkville at 6 p.m.
