MONROE, La. – Texas State used a three-run ninth inning to rally back and salvage a game from the weekend series with a 13-11 win over ULM Sunday afternoon at Lou St. Amant Field.
ULM (17-18 overall, 5-10 Sun Belt Conference) led 11-10 entering the top of the ninth inning. A leadoff single by Daylan Pena and a walk to Aaron Lugo put two runners on for Texas State (17-19, 6-9) with no outs. After a pitching change, Rashawn Galloway hit a pinch-hit RBI single to score pinch runner Cameron O'Banan to tie the game at 11. With two outs, Chris Bernal picked up his second hit of the season, collecting a 2-RBI double to plate Lugo and pinch runner Peyton Benesh for the 13-11 lead.
In the bottom of the ninth,
Jayson Zmejkoski was hit by a pitch with two outs, but was stranded on second base to end the game.
Texas State opened the game on fire and built a 7-0 lead in the top of the first inning, highlighted by a bases-loaded triple by Chase Mora and a 2-run home run by Ian Collier.
ULM slowly battled back, eventually taking the lead.
The Warhawks scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning. With two runners on base and one out, Zmejkoski hit an infield single to second base. A throwing error on the play allowed
Matt Abshire to score to get ULM on the board.
Shawn Dalton Weatherbee followed with a 2-RBI double to cut the gap to 7-3.
Texas State responded in the top of the third inning, as Mora and Kameron Weil each hit an RBI double for the 9-3 advantage.
ULM made its push in the bottom of the fourth inning, stringing six-straight hits together to cut the lead to one. Zmejkoski hit an RBI infield single to third base, scoring
Hasani Johnson. Two batters later,
Bryce Blaser clubbed a 2-RBI double and
Colby Lunsford followed with a 2-RBI single to get the Warhawks within a run, 9-8.
ULM tied the game in the sixth inning as Blaser hit an RBI single to plate Zmejkoski to tie the game at 9.
Texas State regained the lead in the top of the seventh inning, as Pena walked to open the inning, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, went to third on a ground ball and scored on a wild pitch for the 10-9 lead.
The Warhawks bounced back in the bottom of the inning.
Easton Winfield's RBI single brought in pinch runner
Cardell Thibodeaux to knot the game at 10. Zmejkoski then laid down a sacrifice bunt with Johnson scoring on the safety squeeze play to put ULM on top for the first time, 11-10.
Baserunning mistakes cost the Warhawks other opportunities. In the sixth inning, ULM had runners on first and third bases with one out when Blaser was picked off of third base by the catcher, Collier. In the eighth inning, ULM had runners on first and second bases with no outs when Lunsford was picked off of second by pitcher Jonathan Martinez.
ULM pounded out 15 hits in the loss. Blaser and Lunsford each had three hits with Blaser driving in three runs and Lunsford two. Winfield, Zmejkoski and Weatherbee each had two hits, with Zmejkoski and Weatherbee picking up two RBIs apiece. Texas State had 11 hits, with Mora, Weil and Pena all picking up two hits. Mora drove in four runs.
Martinez (2-2) earned the win in relief for Texas State, throwing 1 2/3 shutout innings out of the bullpen with two hits, one walk and one strikeout. Otto Wofford threw a scoreless ninth inning with two strikeouts for his second save.
Carson Orton (3-2) was charged with the loss for ULM, pitching one inning, allowing two runs on one hit with three walks and two strikeouts. He faced two batters in the ninth inning.
Zach Shaw threw three shutout innings across the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, allowing one hit with two strikeouts.
ULM faces Louisiana Tech at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Lou St. Amant Field.
