BATON ROUGE, La. -- The ULM softball team (22-15) led at three separate points in its game at No. 5 LSU (30-4) but ultimately fell to the Tigers 7-4 on Tuesday (April 2) night at Tiger Park in Baton Rouge.
The Warhawks jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first when
Andie Edwards doubled down the left field line to score
Lourdes Bacon. Edwards later crossed home plate on a wild pitch to complete the two-run inning for ULM. LSU evened the score at 2-2 after responding in the bottom of the first. Bacon registered her second hit of the night with two outs to score
Elle Carter with two outs to pull the Warhawks back ahead. The Tigers posted one run in the bottom half of the inning to again tie the game.
Brooklin Lippert delivered another clutch hit for the Warhawks when she poked a two-out RBI hit through the left side that scored Edwards to give ULM a 4-3 advantage. The Tigers claimed their first lead of the night in the third inning after LSU's Karli Petty tied the game on a sacrifice fly and McKenzie Redoutey cleared the bases with a 3-run home run to go up 7-4. Bacon walked and reached base for a third time in the fourth and stole second with two outs, but LSU kept ULM off the scoreboard.
Gianni Hulett entered the game ina. relief appearance in the bottom of the fourth with two runners on and preserved the three-run deficit by inducing a fly out for the final out.
Following a 1-2-3 top of the fifth, Hulett worked around two base runners and fired her first scoreless frame in the bottom of the fifth. ULM went down in order in the top of the sixth. Hulett again worked around traffic on the bases and posted another scoreless inning to keep the Warhawks within three.
Meagan Brown singled with two outs in the seventh, but LSU secured the 7-4 win.
Bacon, Brown and Edwards all finished with a pair of hits. Lippert, Edwards and Bacon were the three Warhawk hitters with RBIs on the night. Bacon and Carter each stole a base in the game.
Victoria Abrams struck out one batter in 2.0 innings of work and took the loss, with her record at 9-7 on the season.
Maddie Nichols tossed 1.2 innings and allowed a pair of runs.
The ULM softball team will return home to start its next conference series versus Georgia Southern on Friday (April 5) at 6 p.m. from the ULM softball complex.
