MONROE, La. – Trey Hill hit a pair of home runs to power Little Rock past ULM, 4-2, Tuesday night at Lou St. Amant Field.
The Little Rock catcher hit a 2-run home run with two outs in the second inning to put the Trojans on top, 3-1. He added insurance with a solo homer with two outs in the seventh inning for the 4-1 advantage.
ULM (18-22 overall) picked up a solo home run from
Shawn Dalton Weatherbee in the eighth inning to get within two runs at 4-2, but were unable to muster another hit. Weatherbee's homer was the only hit for the Warhawks after the fourth inning and only the second hit beyond the first inning.
Little Rock (23-17) took the lead in the top of the first inning as Jake Wright took the first pitch of the game from
Justin Robinson and hit a double down the left field line. A wild pitch moved Wright to third and he scored on Luke Pectol's groundout for the 1-0 lead.
It was a short-lived lead, though, as
Easton Winfield hit his ninth home run, a solo shot, in the bottom of the first to knot the game at 1.
ULM followed Winfield's homer with a single by Weatherbee and a double by
Michelle Artzberger.
Jayson Zmejkoski was hit by a pitch with two outs to load the bases, but the Warhawks were unable to take the lead.
Both pitching staffs excelled in the game.
Malcolm Brown (1-1) earned the win in the short start for the Trojans, throwing three innings, allowing one run on three hits with two hit batters and three strikeouts. Thomas Kuykendall threw four innings out of the bullpen for Little Rock, allowing only Weatherbee's solo homer with one hit batter and four strikeouts. Hunter Royal struck out the side in the ninth for his first save.
Robinson (2-2) took the loss, giving up three runs on two hits with one hit batter and one strikeout in two innings. The ULM bullpen combined to throw seven innings, allowing just one run on six hits with no walks and six strikeouts.
Chipper Menard threw three shutout innings, allowing three hits with four strikeouts.
Beau Blanchard threw a scoreless sixth inning with one strikeout, while
Brandon Brewer threw two scoreless innings with two hits and one strikeout.
Zach Shaw allowed one run on one hit in an inning of work.
Offensively, Weatherbee had two of ULM's five hits, coming up with his sixth homer of the season and third in the last five games.
ULM returns to action at 5 p.m. Friday at Old Dominion.
