MONROE, La. -- The ULM softball team (25-15, 8-4 Sun Belt) completed the series sweep over Georgia Southern (20-16, 4-8) with a walkoff victory in 10 innings on Sunday (April 7) afternoon at the ULM Softball Complex. The Warhawks won their sixth-straight conference game, the longest conference winning streak since 2002.
Carys Platt drove in
Madison Blount in the 10th inning to seal a 3-2 win for ULM.
"I went up to the plate with confidence in myself and my team," said Platt. "I trusted my work and preparation and had confidence in myself."
Gianni Hulett was stellar in the circle and shut down the Eagles' bats. Hulett pitched eight scoreless innings out of the bullpen and sat down six batters on strikeouts while picking up her first win of the season.
"Kassidy [Giddens] threw a great game and started out strong for us," said Hulett. "She set the tone and told us 'We're winning this game.' I knew I had to have her back, and that was the best thing I could do for her. I wanted to continue what she started."
Giddens held Georgia Southern scoreless in the first inning after two Eagles reached base. With runners on second and third and one out, Giddens recorded a strikeout and a fly out to end the inning.
Meagan Brown doubled with two outs down the right field line, but was caught stealing at third to end the first. Giddens allowed a walk with one out before recording a pair of fly outs for her second scoreless inning. After a 1-2-3 bottom of the second, the Eagles scored first with a pair of runs. Hulett entered the game with two runners on and no outs and limited Georgia Southern to just two runs. ULM answered in the bottom of the third when
Jacelyn Buck doubled to start the inning. Pinch runner
Taylor Broddick advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored when
Kelsey Giddens dropped a sacrifice bunt to make the score 2-1. Giddens was stranded at third base to end the third.
Hulett sat down the Eagles in order in the fourth. Buck picked up another hit with two outs in the fourth and moved to second on a wild pitch, but Georgia Southern held the Warhawks scoreless. After a scoreless fifth inning, Georgia Southern had one batter reach on a hit by pitch with one out. Hulett ended the inning with a pop out and a fielder's choice. ULM was retired in order to complete six innings with the score remaining, 2-1 Georgia Southern.
Layla Thompson snagged a sharply hit line drive and threw to first to complete a double play in the seventh inning. Hulett completed her fifth scoreless inning and kept ULM's deficit at one run.
Brooklin Lippert started the seventh and lofted a fly ball to left field that was dropped by the Georgia Southern left fielder and created a huge break for the Warhawks. Buck successfully moved Lippert to third on a bunt. With one out,
Kelsey Giddens tied the game on a sacrifice fly and scored Lippert to make it a 2-2 game at the end of seven innings.
Hulett worked around a leadoff single and punched out a pair of Eagles to hold the visitors scoreless in the eighth.
Lourdes Bacon singled and advanced all the way to third on a groundout and a wild pitch with two outs. ULM was unable to break through, as the game continued to move into extras. The Eagles had no answers for Hulett, who struck out two more batters in the ninth for her seventh scoreless frame.
After ULM was held scoreless in the ninth, Georgia Southern manufactured a hit with two outs in the 10th. Thompson scooped up a grounder and fired to first to end Georgia Southern's chance to take the lead. Blount, who delivered the game-winning hit in game two, displayed patience at the plate and walked to begin the bottom of the 10th.
Elle Carter followed with a four-pitch walk and moved Blount into scoring position. Bacon placed a perfect bunt and beat the throw to load the bases for the Warhawks. Platt broke through and scored Blount on an RBI and finished the series sweep of the Eagles.
"Our team got punched, and this team punched right back," said ULM head coach
Molly Fichtner. "Georgia Southern is a great ball club, and they came out swinging each game. Our senior leadership was impressive this weekend and they encouraged our team. You have seven innings in this sport, and there is no time limit. We try to do the best in all seven innings."
The Warhawks will host Mississippi Valley State on Wednesday (April 10) at 6 p.m. in Monroe before continuing conference play at Troy next weekend.
