GAME NOTES

MONROE, La. - The ULM Warhawks conclude the 2024 season with a three-game series against Arkansas State at 6 p.m. Thursday, 6 p.m. Friday and 6 p.m. Saturday at Lou St. Amant Field.

ULM will recognize 13 seniors prior to Friday night's game between the Warhawks and Red Wolves: catcher Matt Abshire, pitcher Cam Barlow, pitcher Beau Blanchard, outfielder Chenar Brown, pitcher Dalton Burrell, infielder Carson Jones, pitcher Trey Lindsay, pitcher Chipper Menard, pitcher Carson Orton, pitcher Steve Owings, pitcher Parker Seay, outfielder Shawn Dalton Weatherbee and utility player Jayson Zmejkoski. Twelve of the 13 players to be recognized on Friday have earned at least one degree at ULM, while three have earned two degrees and Barlow is on track to earn his second Master's degree in the fall of 2024.

Cam Barlow and Carson Orton will leave their mark on the ULM record book.

Barlow, a sixth-year senior who has spent his entire collegiate career at ULM, has been part of the Warhawk starting pitching rotation since his red-shirt freshman year in 2020. He has made 54 career starts on the mound, the most in ULM history, and is scheduled to make his 55th and final start in his 60th career appearance on Thursday night. His 259 1/3 career innings pitched ranks fifth-most in program history. He is eighth in program history with 219 career strikeouts, and needs one more strikeout to tie Kenny Roussel (1968-71) for the seventh-most in program history. The former walk on earned a bachelor's degree in kinesiology with a concentration in sports management in the spring of 2021, a Master's degree in exercise science in the spring of 2023 and a Master's degree in criminal justice in the fall of 2024.

Orton, a sixth-year senior who has spent four seasons at ULM, has been a mainstay of the backend of the Warhawk bullpen since arriving on the bayou as a third-year freshman in 2021. Better known by his coaches and teammates as "Giggles," he has made a school-record 90 pitching appearances, all out of the bullpen. His 21 career saves rank second-most in program history, and his nine saves in 2021 are third-most in a single season in program history. Over the course of his career, he has inherited 78 baserunners, allowing 36 to score. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in business administration in 2023 and is scheduled to graduate with a Master's degree in business administration in the spring of 2025.

Chipper Menard has been on a roll recently on the mound. In his last five appearances, Menard has combined to throw 17 2/3 innings with a 1.02 ERA, allowing two runs on 13 hits with 18 strikeouts to three walks. He has not allowed a walk over his last 9 2/3 innings. He has lowered his season ERA by 3.07 runs to 5.18 in the stretch. He threw three shutout innings, allowing three hits with four strikeouts vs. Little Rock on April 23. He followed it up with five scoreless innings to earn the win in extra innings, allowing three hits with three walks and four strikeouts at Old Dominion on April 27. He made just his second start of the season in the second game of a doubleheader on May 4, allowing one run on six hits with no walks and a season-high seven strikeouts over a season-high six innings vs. Georgia Southern. Over two appearances at South Alabama last weekend, he threw 3 2/3 innings, allowing one run on one hit with three strikeouts.

Friday's game is the 84th all-time meeting between ULM and Arkansas State. The Red Wolves lead the series, 44-39. Last season, ULM won the Friday night game in Jonesboro, 8-6, before Arkansas State won the final two games of the weekend to take the series. ULM swept the series from A-State to close the regular season in 2022, 16-9, 13-7 and 6-3 at then-Warhawk Field in Monroe. The Warhawks have won four of the last five series against the Red Wolves.

All three games of the weekend series will stream on ESPN+ and air on 105.7 FM/540 AM KMLB, KMLB.com and the TuneIn app with Mike Hammett on the call of the simulcast. A link to live stats is available on the baseball schedule page at ULMWarhawks.com.

WARHAWK GAINS IN 2024
With three games left in the 2024 regular season, ULM has surpassed the 2023 team in numerous statistical categories.

Offensively, ULM is hitting 19 points better in 2024, with a .271 team batting average to .252 in 2023, with the on base percentage increasing by 24 points from .347 to .371 and slugging percentage going up 41 points from .370 to .411.

ULM's offense has scored 10 or more runs in 15 of the first 52 games of the season after having five such games in the entire 2023 season. The Warhawks have picked up 10 or more hits in 22 games after having double figure hits 18 times in 2023.

The Warhawks have already scored more runs than the 2023 squad despite having played two fewer games. ULM has scored 322 runs in 2024 after scoring just 274 runs in 2023. The 2024 team has also surpassed the 2023 team in doubles (86 to 72) and triples (11 to four), while ULM has matched the 2023 team in home runs with 44. The 2024 Warhawks have driven in 49 more runs than the 2023 team (295 to 246).

Individually, five Warhawks enter the final week of the season hitting .300 or better, where no Warhawk hit better than Shawn Dalton Weatherbee's .279 in 2023. Bryce Blaser (.341), Easton Winfield (.320),  Michelle Artzberger (.313), Colby Lunsford (.306) and Weatherbee (.302) are all qualifying hitters that have a batting average over .300.

Winfield's team-leading 62 hits in 2024 have bested Kade Dupont's team-high 55 hits in 2023. Blaser and Artzberger have tied Riley Davis' team-best 12 doubles from 2023. Five players (Blaser, Artzberger, Haggard, Abshire and Weatherbee) have at least 10 doubles this season while only three players (Davis, Dupont, Cardell Thibodeaux) reached the mark last year. Lunsford and Winfield have three triples each, which both surpass Travis Washburn's 2023 total of two. Winfield's 10 homers tops 2023 team-leader Davis' eight, while Winfield is the first Warhawk with double-figure homers since Mason Holt's 16 in 2022. Jake Haggard leads the 2024 team with 37 RBIs, while Artzberger and Winfield each have 36 and Weatherbee has 31, all better than Davis' team-best 30 in 2023. Lunsford and Artzberger have drawn 25 walks compared to Davis' team-high 23 from 2023, while Winfield's 16 stolen bases tops Cardell Thibodeaux's 12 from 2023.

On the mound, ULM's team ERA is 1.39 runs beter in 2024 than 2023, at 5.95 to 7.34. With three games remaining, ULM has allowed just 476 hits in 2024 to 572 in 2023, 330 runs in 2024 to 440 in 2023, 298 earned runs in 2024 to 379 earned runs in 2023, 219 walks in 2024 to 245 walks in 2023 and has amassed 432 strikeouts in 2024 to 420 strikeouts in 2023. Opponents are hitting .272 against ULM in 2024 after hitting .302 in 2023.

While individual pitching stats are difficult to compare between the two seasons with the implementation of the pod system in 2024, ULM has had 18 different pitchers make at least six appearances covering a minimum of six innings in 2024. The Warhawks have four pitchers that have thrown at least 10 innings in 2024 to have an ERA under 5.00 with Dalton Hitt at 0.61, Zach Shaw at 2.79, Parker Seay at 3.09 and Carson Orton at 4.45, while the 2023 team had two such players in Nicholas Judice at 3.74 and Dalton Burrell at 4.18.

BASEBALL HAS THE SACRIFICE
Under Michael Federico, ULM has typically been near the top of the Sun Belt Conference and NCAA Division I in sacrifice bunts, and 2024 has been no different. The Warhawks enter play on Wednesday sitting fourth in the SBC and 36th nationally with 32 sacrifice bunts on the year. Eleven different Warhawks have tallied at least one sacrifice bunt this season and eight have multiple sacrifice bunts, with Hasani Johnson leading the team with seven sacrifice bunts, which ranks seventh in the SBC.
