Big Innings Send Warhawks Past Georgia State in Run-Rule Win

ULM scored five runs in both the fourth and fifth innings and Victoria Abrams tossed a complete-game shutout in ULM's win.

ATLANTA -- The ULM softball team (29-23, 10-12 Sun Belt) generated 10 runs in the final two innings and Victoria Abrams pitched a complete-game shutout as the Warhawks snapped a seven-game SBC losing streak with a 10-0 run-rule win in five innings over Georgia State (11-40, 1-21) on Thursday (May 2).

The Warhawks tallied 10 runs on five hits and capitalized on six Georgia State errors. Five different Warhawks finished with hits while Meagan Brown, Jacelyn Buck and Carys Platt each scored two runs apiece. Abrams allowed just three hits in five innings of work and struck out two Panthers.

Brown drew a walk with two outs in the first before the Panthers retired the side. Abrams worked around a runner at first with two outs and the game was scoreless after one inning. Both teams went down in order in the second inning. Lourdes Bacon walked and stole second base with two outs in the top of the third before Georgia State recorded the final out on a strikeout. The first two Panthers reached base safely in the bottom of the third. Abrams navigated around the traffic on the bases and strung together three consectuive outs, including her first strikeout of the game, to end Georgia State's scoring threat.

ULM broke it open in the fourth inning with five runs. Brown began the inning with a walk and Maryssa Zenzen followed with a walk. ULM's first run came off of a sacrifice bunt error that scored Brown from second base. After another Georgia State error, Zenzen crossed home plate on Georgia State's third error of the inning to give ULM its second run. With one out, Buck hammered a double down the left field line that scored Platt and Edwards. Brooklin Lippert's RBI bunt single rounded out the scoring for the Warhawks in the inning with Buck scoring the fifth run. The Panthers had two batters get on base with two outs, but Abrams kept the Georgia State bats in check with her fourth scoreless inning.

Brown reached base for the fourth time of the game on a double to kickstart ULM's offense in the fifth. Brown later stole third and scored on a Panther error to increase the Warhawks' lead to six. The Warhawks scored the final four runs all with two outs. Elle Carter smoked a double through the left side that scored Platt. Madison Blount followed with another double to left and Carter scored easily to make the count 8-0 Warhawks. Taylor Broddick crossed home plate on a fielder's choice and Lippert tacked on another RBI with Buck scoring ULM's 10th run. Abrams completed the shutout in the fifth and struck out the final batter of the game, giving ULM a 10-0 win in five innings.

The Warhawks will continue their series at Georgia State tomorrow with game two being played at 4 p.m. CT in Atlanta.
