Warhawks Score 10-Straight Runs to Rally Past SFA Wednesday, 11-6

MONROE, La. – ULM scored 10 unanswered runs to rally from a five-run deficit for an 11-6 win over Stephen F. Austin in the final midweek game of the 2024 season Wednesday night at Lou St. Amant Field.

ULM (21-28 overall) struggled out of the gate, committing a season-high four errors over the first three innings. Tyree Carr hit a 2-run home run while Cole Hill and Colton Griffin hit RBI singles as part of a four-run second inning to put SFA (9-40) on top.

The Warhawks looked for a strong response in the bottom of the second as Matt Abshire hit a leadoff single to extend his career-best hitting streak to eight games. He scored on Jake Haggard's RBI double, but Haggard was thrown out trying to advance to third on the throw home to empty the bases. SFA led 4-1 after two innings.

The Lumberjacks added two more runs in the top of the third inning, taking advantage of two walks and two errors in the inning, with the second run scoring on a two-out error, for a 6-1 lead.

ULM started to flip the momentum in the bottom of the third as Michelle Artzberger and Shawn Dalton Weatherbee were each hit by a pitch to open the inning before Easton Winfield clubbed a 3-run home run to left-center field to cut the gap to 6-4.

It looked like SFA was ready to pounce and extend the lead again in the top of the fourth when Zach Shaw fully flipped the momentum to the Warhawks. Griffin walked to open the inning and stole second. Cal Martin doubled off the batter's eye in center field, but Griffin had to hold at third base on the play to put two runners in scoring position with no outs. However, Shaw struck out the next two batters and induced a ground ball to end the inning without allowing a run.

ULM drew a run closer in the bottom of the inning on Artzberger's RBI single to score Carson Jones, making it 6-5.

Shaw threw another scoreless inning in the fifth before Winfield led off the home half of the inning with a double and moved to third on Bryce Blaser's single. Matt Abshire's sacrifice fly tied the game at 6.

After Aidan Haynes retired the side in order in the top of the sixth, the Warhawks exploded for the lead in the bottom of the inning. Weatherbee hit an RBI double to score Artzberger for the 7-6 lead. Blaser's sacrifice bunt allowed Weatherbee to score to make it 8-6. Abshire picked up an RBI single on a flare down the right field line to score Winfield to push the lead to 9-6. Jack Clark's RBI single up the middle brought in Abshire for the 10-6 advantage. Hasani Johnson's bases-loaded walk plated Haggard to cap the inning with an 11-6 lead.

Beau Blanchard, Brandon Brewer and Carson Orton each threw scoreless innings to keep SFA off the board as ULM held on for the 11-6 win.

Winfield led ULM with his second four-hit game of the season, with a home run, double, three RBIs and three runs scored. Abshire added three hits, including a double, with two RBIs and two runs scored. Haggard also had two hits with a double, RBI and a run scored. Hill, Peyton Parker and Carr each had two hits for SFA, with Carr driving in two runs with a home run and a double.

Aidan Haynes (1-0) picked up his first win of the season for ULM, throwing the perfect sixth inning with two strikeouts. Shaw, Haynes, Blanchard, Brewer and Orton combined to throw six shutout innings, allowing just four hits with two walks and 10 strikeouts. Will Larson (0-4) took the loss for SFA, allowing five runs on five hits with three walks in two thirds of an inning.

ULM begins a Sun Belt Conference series at 6:30 p.m. Friday at South Alabama.
