ULM Women's Golf Notches Second-Place Finish in Season-Opening Tournament

Daniela Campillo finished second individually to lead ULM in the team's first tournament of the season.

HOOVER, Ala. -- Sophomore Daniela Campillo sank 12 birdies in three rounds and finished second individually to help lead the ULM women's golf team capture a second-place finish at the 2024 UAB Hoover Invite to start the 2024-25 season.

ULM held a four-stroke cushion over Alabama after 36 holes of play going into the final day of competition before the Crimson Tide surpassed the Warhawks on the final 18 holes of the tournament. Campillo turned in two scorecards below par and finished just two strokes back of the medalist, Gabi Nicastro of Samford.

"I am really proud of the effort that our team showed this week," said ULM Head Coach Rachel Pollock. "Yesterday we got off to a great start with Isabel [Mas Pitarch] and Daniela shooting 69 (-3) and having some solid scores. Today we faced some adversity, but I was proud of how the girls responded and finished strong despite not having our best golf today."

Campillo began her sophomore season in a big way and finished with a three-round score of 213 (-3) with rounds of 69-73-71 at the season-opening event.

"I am happy with the week and with the consistent golf I played, especially in the final holes," said Campillo. "It is a good start to the season and I am thankful for my teammates and coaches for their support."

"Daniela had a great week," added Pollock. "Her play was consistent, and she has proven that she can contend every week."

As a team, the Warhawks posted scores of 284-294-302 (-4, +6, +14) in the three rounds. Johanna Sjursen completed the event at +5 overall and fired an even-par round in the opening round on Monday. Isabel Mas Pitarch shined in her ULM debut and placed t-17th overall at +6. The freshman from Castellon, Spain carded a score of 69 (-3) in her opening round of the season. Anna Andrysova (+12) and Matilda Svahn (+18) rounded out the scoring for ULM, while Tessa Ion finished at +12 as an individual.

"We are looking forward to the rest of the fall season and have two weeks to prepare before our next event in Illinois," said Pollock. "We are looking forward to competing with the best teams in the country."

The Warhawks will continue its fall season at the Illini Women's Invitational at Medinah starting on Oct. 7.
