STEPHENVILLE, Tx – The ULM volleyball team split the doubleheader on day two of the Dr. Pam Littleton Classic on Saturday. It swept Alcorn State 3-0 (25-7, 25-12, 25-11) and dropped a five-set loss 3-2 (25-20, 23-25, 16-25, 25-14, 15-9) to Tarleton State.
Against Alcorn (1-8), an 11-0 start followed by a 5-1 run put the Warhawks (4-8) firmly ahead 16-1. There was no fightback from the Braves, and ULM took the set.
The Warhawks fell behind 5-2 in set two before four straight points gave them the lead. Alcorn used a 4-1 run to retake the lead 9-7. ULM responded with a commanding 10-1 scoring run to take a seven-point lead. The Braves only scored two more points as the Warhawks dominated the set.
The third set featured an 11-1 start for the Warhawks to take control of the set. They never gave up that control, and the sweep was secured for ULM.
Hannah Redrow produced ten kills with 11 digs, and
Morgan Howard had 22 assists.
Cameron Rogers tallied 16 digs, and
Sydney Garrison produced 11.
In the first set of game two, both teams started the set even. With the score at 9-8 in favor of the Texans, ULM scored four straight points to take a three-point lead. It led 18-16 late before an 8-1 scoring run gave the Texans control of the set. They scored the final point to take a 1-0 match lead.
With the Warhawks behind 8-6 in the second set, they scored five straights to take a three-point lead. Tarleton State slowly climbed back in front and led 18-15, but ULM used a 7-2 run to take a 22-20 lead. A final kill by Garrison claimed the set for the Warhawks.
ULM raced out to an 11-5 lead to begin set three. With the help of a 6-1 scoring run, it was all business for the Warhawks as they secured a nine-point set win. With the score at 10-7, The Texans used a 5-0 run to take firm control of the set. A 6-2 run by the Warhawks brought the game within four, but Tarleton State scored eight out of the last nine points to tie the match and force a fifth set.
The Texans started the set with a 6-4 lead before ULM decreased the lead to one with an 8-7 score. A 5-1 run by Tarleton State put the lead at five, and two final kills gave it the set and the match.
Brown led the team with 16 kills, while Redrow and Cloyd also were in the double-digits.
Kailey Friedrich and Howard had 26 and 21 assists, and Rogers had 22 digs.
The Warhawks will start conference play next weekend, with Southern Miss coming to Monroe. Game one of the weekend takes place on Friday, September 27, at 6 p.m.
