Women’s Basketball Preview: Arkansas State

The Warhawks are looking to build off of Thursday’s win over Southern Miss.

MONROE, La. – The ULM women's basketball team (6-9, 2-2 Sun Belt) will remain at home for the final in a four-game homestand. The Warhawks will face the Arkansas State Red Wolves (7-7, 3-1 Sun Belt) at 2 p.m. on Saturday (Jan. 11) in Fant-Ewing Coliseum. The Red Wolves and the Warhawks are looking to build from Sun Belt win streaks.

SERIES HISTORY –

The Warhawks and the Red Wolves will be competing for the 55th time in the series, the first being an 87-57 win for ULM on Jan. 17, 1983. ULM is looking for its third-straight win over Arkansas State in the series, as the Warhawks swept the Red Wolves last season. On Feb. 27, 2024, ULM took down Arkansas State, 69-60, winning in Jonesboro for the first time since 2011.

SCOUTING THE RED WOLVES –

The Red Wolves are looking to extend their three-game win streak, most recently claiming a win at Texas State, 66-50. The team has also marked notable wins over Arizona State, Jackson State and Georgia State. Kyanna Morgan leads the team in points per game (9.6) and Kennedie Montue leads in field goal percentage (.479) and three-point percentage (.410). Sophomore Crislyn Rose dropped 33 points against Arizona State (Nov. 8), and was awarded Sun Belt Player of the Week for the stand-out performance. The Red Wolves are looking to surpass preseason expectations, as they were selected to finish 13th in the preseason coaches poll after a 13-17 record last season, falling to the Ragin' Cajuns in the first round of the Sun Belt Tournament.

LEADING THE TEAM –

Jakayla Johnson tallied 20 points, three rebounds and four assists versus Southern Miss (Jan. 9). She leads the team in points per game (14.5), field goals made (80) and steals (25). Johnson is also fourth in the Sun Belt in points per game. Sakyia White opened the season going 9-9 vs. Central Baptist (Nov. 4), dropping 18 points and leading the team in field goal percentage (.505). She then followed up with a 16-rebound performance vs. Tulane (Dec. 21), leading the team in rebounds per game (7.6).

RAINING TRIPLES –

Meloney Thames dropped 22 points against Georgia Southern (Jan. 2), shooting five three-pointers, a team-high this season. The last time a Warhawk hit five triples prior to Thames was Jakayla Johnson versus Georgia Southern in the Sun Belt Tournament last season. Just two days later, Nya Valentine hit five shots beyond the arc against Old Dominion, three coming in the final 30 seconds of the game.
