Warhawks Open Homestand with 77-58 Loss Versus Troy

Three ULM players reached double figures in the game.

MONROE, La. – The ULM men's basketball (4-15, 0-6 Sun Belt Conference) team fell to Troy (11-6, 4-2) by a score of 77-58 in the Warhawks' first game of their four-game homestand on Wednesday (Jan. 15) night at Fant-Ewing Coliseum in Monroe, La.
 
Jacob Wilson and Coltie Young combined for six 3-point buckets in the game and both finished with 16 points. Tyreese Watson reached double figures for the 10th time this season with 14 points and led the Warhawks with five assists. Makai Willis pulled down a team-high eight rebounds and added a block. Willis, Wilson and Watson all tallied a pair of steals.

For the Trojans, Cooper Campbell and Thomas Dowd led the way with 16 points each while Tayton Conerway and Kerrington Kiel both had 10. Keil and Connerway both recorded double-doubles with Keil grabbing 10 boards and Connerway passing 12 assists.

ULM shot 5-for-12 from long distance in the first half and was limited to 3-for-15 shooting from 3-point range in the second half. The Trojans made 11 3-pointers and shot 48.4% from the field. Troy outrebounded the Warhawks 48-32 and outscored the Warhawks 36-16 in the paint.
 
Young knocked down his first look from deep and gave the Warhawks an early 3-2 edge. ULM trailed by as many as six points in the opening five minutes. The Warhawks gained their first lead of the night after Wilson connected on his first jumper and Bolden knocked down a triple to make the score 12-11 Warhawks. Watson converted four consecutive free throw attempts and pushed the ULM lead to 18-16 with 11:17 left in the first half.
 
Troy regained the lead from a 6-0 run and led by seven with less than seven minutes in the half. Wilson drained consecutive 3-point buckets that whittled the Trojans' lead to one. Willis finished at the rim with a layup and ULM led 30-29 with two minutes left in the first. The Trojans responded and closed out the first half on a 6-0 scoring spree with 3-pointers by Campbell and Valdes, giving the visitors a 35-30 lead at the break. Watson, Young and Wilson all finished the first half with eight points each.
 
The Trojans compiled a 14-2 scoring run to open the second half and led by double digits for the first time all night when Keil knocked down a 3-pointer to give Troy a 42-32 lead. Rigsby Jr. completed the Troy run with a second-chance layup, increasing the Trojans' lead to 49-32 with 15:54 remaining. A Wilson jumper in the paint assisted by AD Diedhiou and two more free throws by Watson brought the Warhawks within 12 points with just over 11 minutes to go. Troy stretched its lead to 20 points at the 6:41 mark when Campbell cut through the lane and finished a driving layup. ULM would not come closer than 16 points to Troy's lead down the final stretch.
 
The ULM men's basketball team continues its homestand on Saturday (Jan. 18) with its final regular season matchup versus the Ragin' Cajuns at 2 p.m. from Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
