Warhawks Take Down Bobcats in Road Win, 74-66

The ULM women’s basketball team has claimed their second Sun Belt win on the road.

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The ULM women's basketball team (8-11, 4-4 Sun Belt) has claimed another conference win, this time over the Texas State Bobcats (9-10, 3-6 Sun Belt) on Saturday (Jan. 25) afternoon. Laila Walker posted her second double-double of the season and Cianté Downs tallied her first career triple in the battle-back win.

Jakayla Johnson led the team with 18 points, also recording four steals and two rebounds. Downs scored in double-figures for the fifth time this season, notching 13 points and four rebounds. Walker led the team with 16 rebounds, also recording 12 points on the day in her double-double showing. To round out the double-digit scoring, Sakyia Whiterecorded 11 points and eight rebounds.

Texas State opened the scoring with a triple, putting ULM behind early. Once Johnson got going, however, the Warhawks found their groove. A few triples by the Bobcats kept them close with ULM, but triples began to fall for Meloney Thames and Johnson to break the tie between the teams. The Warhawks shot 56% from the field to close the quarter ahead, 21-16.

ULM extended the lead by going on a 7-0 run to open the second quarter, with Downs dropping her first career three-pointer. The Bobcats continued to fight, shooting 4-4 from the field to come back from the largest deficit of the night, 15 points. A scoring drought for the Warhawks helped Texas State to close the gap to single digits at the half, 38-29.

A comeback was in play for the Bobcats in the third quarter, with the Texas State defense keeping the Warhawks from the basket and cutting the lead to five. A three-point play by Jaylin Foster and a triple gave Texas State the lead for the first time since the start of the contest. The Warhawks posted seven turnovers to fall behind, with the Bobcats going on a 13-2 run to close the third quarter, 50-48.

The Warhawks were committed to battling back in the final 10 minutes, with Walker tying the game and Downs regaining the lead for ULM. The Warhawks opened the fourth quarter going on a 13-2 run to establish the lead again, with Walker and Downs taking charge of ULM's offense. While the Bobcats did not let up, ULM refused to back down, claiming the road win, 74-66.

The Warhawks will return home for a three-game homestand, taking on the South Alabama Jaguars. Tip-off at Fant-Ewing Coliseum on Thursday (Jan. 30) is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT.
