Warhawks Pick Up Draw in Front of Record-Breaking Crowd

Skylar Blaise also logged her third career brace in the contest.

MONROE, La. – The ULM soccer team (7-2-3, 2-0-3 Sun Belt) remain undefeated in the Sun Belt and at Brown Stadium, pulling a 2-2 draw against South Alabama (7-3-1, 3-1-1 Sun Belt) on Thursday evening (Oct. 2). The Warhawks hand the Jaguars their first draw of the season, while ULM picks up their third and second in a row.

The contest was held in front of a record 503 fans, beating out the original record by over 40. The record previously was 465 people, set in 2015 against Louisiana Tech.

The Warhawks came out hot offensively, putting up several shots and drawing three corner kicks in the first six minutes. The set pieces did not bring a score for ULM, however, but increased momentum for the Warhawk offense. A penalty kick came in favor of ULM in the 15th minute, taken by Ava Goodman but saved by goalkeeper Sierra Giorgio.

Just a minute later, a penalty kick came in favor of the Jaguars, Ava Metherne hitting the back of the net for the 1-0 lead in the 16th minute. This brought the pendulum swinging in the direction of South Alabama. A few shot attempts had the opponents in firm control, before a few more corner kicks brought the momentum back to ULM.

After a missed free kick for South Alabama, Skylar Blaise picked things up from Margret Edda Bjarnadottir in the 38thminute, as she scored her seventh goal of the season to tie the score. This was Bjarnadottir's seventh assist of the season, placing her in fifth place in the record books. Neither team was able to break the tie at the conclusion of the first half, leaving it 1-1.

The Warhawks picked up where they left off in the second half, starting strong and tallying a shot on target in the first 30 seconds. A free kick and a corner kick came in for ULM, but to no avail, before Blaise took back control to claim the lead and her second goal of the night against the Jaguars.

South Alabama refused to give up, looking for the tying goal. Both teams continued to draw fouls and set pieces were aplenty throughout the final 45 minutes, setting up saves for Handy and Giorgio. After a yellow card was assigned to Zamiyah Hill, the Metherne broke through again for the tying goal in the 70th minute.

Multiple shots on target came in for both teams as they fought for the game winner. But a fast-paced match did not allow for either team to come out on top, securing the 2-2 draw and giving each team a point.

Blaise led the team with four shots as she picked up the first brace for ULM of the season. The last brace for a Warhawk came almost exactly a year prior for Blaise, two goals in a draw against James Madison in 2024.

Ava Goodman also got in on the action with three shots, Janne Van Brummelen collecting a shot on target as well. Goalkeeper Handy claimed one save on the evening, with the Warhawk defense blocking shots left and right as well.

The Jaguars led in shots (12-10) and saves (4-1), also leading in the high count of fouls for both teams, 12-11. The Warhawks notched nine corners on the night to South Alabama's two, also recording six shots on goal to the Jaguars' three.

ULM Soccer will hit the road for Hattiesburg on Sunday (Oct. 5) against the Southern Miss Golden Eagles. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
