ULM Soccer Claims First Sun Belt Regular Season Title with Unbeaten League Record

The Warhawks picked up a 2-1 win over the Ragin’ Cajuns to clinch the outright conference championship.

LAFAYETTE, La. – The ULM soccer team (11-2-4, 6-0-4 Sun Belt) completed an unbeaten Sun Belt slate by capturing a 2-1 victory over the Ragin' Cajuns (7-6-4, 4-3-3 Sun Belt) on Wednesday (Oct. 29) night. The win secures an outright regular season title for the Warhawks, their first in program history. Skylar Blaise notched a record-breaking goal for the early lead, with Ava Goodman securing the win with a late goal.

The Ragin' Cajuns took early possession of the ball in the first half, finding six shots before the Warhawks could get their first. Goalkeeper Jen Handy was able to notch a few saves early to prevent a score from the home team. But once ULM got going, they began to grab control and turn the tides.

Libby Holmes captured the first shot on target, off a Warhawk corner kick. Another set piece for ULM set up a header from Blaise, her 12th goal of the season and record 23rd of her career. Ally Richardson posted her fourth assist of the season as well. The Warhawk defense was able to prevent the equalizer as the clock ran out in the first half to hold onto a 1-0 lead at halftime.

Early in the second half, both teams battled for momentum to swing in their direction. A handball called on the Warhawks in the 56th minute set up a penalty kick for the Cajuns, who slotted it in for the 1-1 equalizer.

As momentum shifted for the home team, the ULM defense pressed to prohibit another score. While the Ragin' Cajuns continued to launch shots, they were unable to reach the back of the net.

In the 78th minute, Goodman launched a ball to lift over the goalkeeper's head and right into the top center for the lead and eventual game winner. The goal was the senior's third of the season and first game winner while at ULM.

The game got chippy as time began to wind down, with fouls traded between teams. ULM picked up a few yellow cards, with the Cajuns also capturing a few. While both teams pushed for an extra goal, time expired with the Warhawks on top, 2-1.

Blaise led the team with two shots on the night in addition to her goal. Goodman and Richardson also picked up points on the evening. Goalkeeper Handy logged three saves in her 90 minutes in goal.

Blaise's goal marks the most ever scored by a ULM soccer player with 23. She surpasses Cindy Barker (2000-03) as the all-time leading scorer, with more matches to play this season. Her 12 goals this season also lead the Sun Belt.

ULM captures their first Sun Belt regular season title with six conference wins, the most league wins for the Warhawks since joining the SBC. The victory secured their stance as the lone Sun Belt team left that was unbeaten in conference play and at home. Their unbeaten streak extends to 13 as they enter the postseason.

The Warhawks will move ahead to the postseason, competing in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament in Foley, Alabama. The tournament begins Monday, November 3, with the championship on Saturday, November 8.
